During a mid-March visit to Big Bend National Park in Texas, I recorded this immersive binaural soundscape at dawn in Santa Elena Canyon. It features wind blowing through a dense thicket of Carrizo Cane (an invasive species from Asia that is now common along the Rio Grande), which produces clicks and clatters as gusts pass through the stiff, bamboo-like reeds. Ravens nest in the canyon and croak repeatedly as they fly up and down the Rio Grande River, their calls echoing off the steep cliffs above. Such a pleasing, enveloping mix of the sounds of the wind, ravens and reeds!. Please wear headphones for optimal immersion!

I visited Sri Lanka's Sinharaja rainforest during the monsoon season with the hope of recording some of it’s unique wildlife, but the torrential rain forced me to spend most of my time sheltering inside a lodge! However on the final morning of my stay the rain eased for a few hours and I had a brief opportunity to record the sounds you hear on this album.

The Murrumbidgee is Australia’s second longest river, and is home to important eco-systems both above and below it’s flowing waters. Along the banks of the Murrumbidgee, forests of large River Red Gum trees are a haven for wildlife, and provide vital nesting hollows for numerous bird and mammal species.

This recording was made on the banks of the Murrumbidgee and captures the relaxing sounds of the river flowing to a backdrop of birdsong. Occasionally you can hear the rubbing of branches of a dead tree snagged in the water.

Recorded in the heart of The Grampians, this album captures the sounds of a rushing stream and birdsong from the surrounding forest. 

Seamlessly divided into three tracks, the album was recorded on a single afternoon by a river in Grampians National Park Victoria. The birdsong on this particular album is subtle and mostly in the background, with the stream being the prominent feature. However, a number of bird species can be heard including Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Gang-gang Cockatoo, Superb Fairywren, Grey Fantail, Yellow-faced Honeyeater, Eastern Spinebill, New Holland Honeyeater, White-throated Treecreeper & Spotted Pardalote. 

With the natural 'white-noise' from the rushing stream, this recording is ideal for noise-masking, as a sleeping aid, and for sufferers of tinnitus.

The montane rainforests of Gunung Halimun are one of the last truly wild places on the island of Java. Logging and intensive farming have all taken their toll on this densely populated Indonesian island, and only small fragments of healthy forest remain.

In the lush, steep hills of the Gunung Halimun-Salak mountain range, rushing mountain streams cascade through ancient mossy forests, and wildlife is abundant.

This album captures the gentle sounds of a mountain stream along with birds, frogs and insects from the surrounding rainforest from afternoon until about the early hours of the morning. 

With the natural 'white-noise' from the rushing stream, this album is ideal for noise-masking, as a sleeping aid, and for sufferers of tinnitus.

Mountain Stream

'Mountain Stream' - Album Sample - recorded in Gunung Halimun National Park, Java

The sound recorded was for a project around the flamingos of the Yucatan. I arrived at this location to record surround sound of an estuary that was located inland. There was a tower about 50 ft. high that I climbed to record the sounds of the birds as they were waking up for the day. I was in the tower by 4:30am and recorded for the next five hours. This is as the sun was just coming up and the birds were calling out in waves of strange noises. Some of which did not sound like birds and the guide that was with me could not name. It was quite the experience. I was in the Yucatan for a period of two weeks and during that time was able to record in many different areas and of course I spent a lot of time with the flamingos. I recorded using a Sound Devices 664 mixer/recorder and at times used a Sound Devices 663. Most of the recordings were done using a Schoeps Stereo set up and a surround sound Holophone.
