A soothing and relaxing piece of music played live by a young person during the Nature Beats Sonic Signatures programme.

Sounds of Foleshill is a musical soundscape produced by young people in collaboration with musician, Luke Weaver. Sounds have been collected through nature walks in Foleshill (Coventry), including the canal, streets and local green spaces. The participants had masterclasses with local musicians - Mahandra Patel (Kadence Music), Parv Kaur (Eternal Taal) and musical storytelling sessions with Godiva Trust. This was a 7-week experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by the young people where they learnt about their local neighbourhood and about the diverse cultures of Coventry expressed through music.

This recording is of a Tibetan Horn made by a young person on the course. The horn was brought in to the seen by one of the music leaders, and was taller than everyone when standing upright! What a sound

P09 01 - Chill Step - Nature Beats

Two totally original tracks, created by participants on the September-October 2017 Nature Beats course. 

Sounds were recorded indoors, outdoors, while on woodland days and in using our portable studio set up on Fridays. Collaboration happened during afternoon music sessions between guitarists, writers, producers and art/graphic designers, where ideas would form out of jamming, chatting and listening to music of all styles throughout the course.

01 Out in the Wild

Listen to the 'Sounds of Lillington' made by the young people from Lillington, Warwickshire. A collaboration with Youth Music funded 'Nature Beats Sonic Signatures' and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust's Dunsmore Living Landscape programme.

Young people from Wild Earth took part in online music production workshops during the lockdown phase of the Coronavirus crisis. This will be an organic playlist with tracks added to it as we complete the production.

During lockdown, young people took part in structured sessions delivered online to connect them with their local green spaces. Using the nature awareness techniques that were usually taught in outdoor settings, this was shared online and young people took part in bite size awareness sessions. Once they found a their chosen spot, they were able to track the changes using sound recorgings, on a weekly basis that depcited changes in the season and change in behaviour in the natural world around them. One significant aspect was the behaviour of the blackbirds. They were very vocal with their birdsong and general behaviour  during Spring and Summer. 
Using the recorded sounds and vidoes of blackbirds, young people were asked to think of beats that they interpreted frrom the blackbird songs. Each young person shared their beats and rythmic patterns and were guided to replicate it on instruments and objects. These included, a violin, keyboard, didgeridoo, vase, percussion, stones and vocals. Six young people and 3 members of staff were involved in the co-production.
"It was very interesting to see how a piece of music can be made from collecting different sound bytes from a birdsong. It is fascinating! We were all able to contribute in the music making." - Participant.
