We made an online collaboration between January 2020 and January 2021.

In this first preview, I play the latest of my mosesas, my 13th one, a bass version, while Paulo Chagas responded with great sensitivity with his bass clarinet.

dusk departure (Matthies, Daly & Chagas)

“Leaving together, Leaving apart” is one of 6 pieces I recorded using my 8th mosesa
In November 2018. I have since made several other models,, but recently rediscovered this album in my files.

It anticipates many things that I am doing currently, namely playing and responding to overtones and instrument body resonances. Tuning is by ear as well as all playing. I tuned the instrument to resonate with my wishes when playing.

The mosesa 8 is composed to 2 guitar strings, a cello bridge resting on a thin, patched and pressed wooden bowl. I used a DPA microphone, external guitar pedals and internal Logic Pro filters to create the sound that you hear.

The emotional background for these pieces, “Leaving together, Leaving apart” was the coming and goings between myself and one of my children of college age. I felt so much joy at being together, then sorrow with leaving.
The music is not illustrative, and I think focuses mostly on the joy of relating each moment with another.

Leaving Together, Leaving Apart, 4, 11 - 17 - 18

I had already been a follower of Felipe Barbosa's work (aka 7 i i ) on SoundCloud when I finally asked him if I could add mosesa parts to his electronic music.

I was thrilled that he agreed.

I like telling him that his pieces feel like they were made for the mosesa.

His electronic pieces breathe and undulate in wonderful swells, sometimes contrasts, but always with a great richness, with a fine ear for detail and all in incredibly large range of dynamics.

My mosesa parts are like vines that grow on and comment on his wonderful creations.

I am honored that I got to play along with his pieces, now I am happy to share them with you. They are among my most treasured pieces that I have made.

Flowers forgotten at dawn

I sent music I titled "Ravine" to Paulo Chagas, who listened closely to it and responded with his alto sax. Our album explores this close listening in context of various mental landscapes, with this piece, being in a metaphoric ravine.

“Mirror” is a reflection on the album (by the same name), that Paul Chagas and I collaborated on. Paulo initiated this piece via internet, and I responded. 
It touches on the various soundscapes that we evoked.

So when he said, let’s invite Henry Koek to join us, I did not fully know what would happen.

Henry Koek writes cosmic poems and makes shaman sounding percussive music,
so to our pleasure,….that is what blended into our mixes.

Paulo Chagas initiated this trio piece with his wind instrument part. Henry Koek added many sound textures in addition to his voice, I finished with percussion and my MaaTeeSaa1 sounds.

This piece continues the shamanist inspired tone of the album.

Here is the poem that I wrote which inspired this music:
Hum, just above, a darkness of earth

River runs nearby,
gurgles and murmurs, 

sounds out 
under submerged tree trunks, 
pale and immersed in the flow.
Blackness of deep night 
has 
already settled here.

Still,
fine, serrated leaves whisper with the wind,
gently hover over darkness.

Stems from last year
still 
rise up,
Still,
connected to dark earth.

Purple blossoms, in rows of hearts

While we worked on this album, 
making music for a peaceful world was on our mind.

October Grounds, 8 is the 2nd of two album preview pieces for the album
October Grounds (1-8)

In this piece I used my 8th mosesa. If you compare how the mosesa 8 sounds to the 9the one, you may hear that it has higher pitches, thinner strings and a thinner, lighter character.
As with October Grounds, 6, I mixed external and internal effects to get the sound quality that you hear, it is a semi-acoustic instrument using a thin wood bowl to filter and preamplify the sound quality before being processed. The intent is to have an instrument that is as versatile and as expressive as possible as established world instruments are such as the viola from Western Europe, the Kamnache from the Mid-East and the Erhu from the Far East but offering new sound qualities not heard by those instruments.

Compositionally speaking, this is an improvisation as the other 7 pieces are on the album, and this is the concluding piece, ie. summarizing the themes I used in the other pieces. 

As with “October Grounds,6”, this one is also a “modern modal piece,” meaning I intentionally use the physical and auditory vibrations of the instrument to find dominant tones and then to respond in contrast with sounds that cause expressive tension, but to also use sounds in degrees of concordance to blend towards resolution for expressive tension and release.

Impressions-1 (Duarte, piano, Matthies, mosesa 2A, mixing)

“Between You and We” is made up of three parts of a 41 minute piece.
Each piece is a stand alone piece but works even better heard one after the other.

The music is freely improvised in a free melodic form that I call Modern Modal Music.
It means that I use melodies and variations on them using a basic reference tone.
The melodies work to push and pull from the basic bass tone all the while taking advantage of the unique sound quality that the mosesa offers as filtered through electronic pedals amplified through a bass amp. Micro tones, overtones, scrapes, knocks, …any sound quality is welcomed in Modern Modal Music as long as it supports the expression of the melodies.
