This song was written by Tim Osborne as the soundtrack to a 40 minute documentary film about the true story of an RAF pilot in World War Two.

‘Stirling’s War’ is a 40 minute documentary film made by Element Films that is based on true events during the German Occupation of the Channel Islands.

It focuses on RAF night fighter pilot Flight Sergeant Robert Stirling who took off from Exeter Airfield in south-west England one night in April 1941 and ended up parachuting out of his stricken Hawker Hurricane aircraft and landing uninjured onto a small island off the west coast of Guernsey. After being taken in for the night by a local couple, he gave himself up to the German Authorities the next morning, and ended up in various prisoner-of-war camps in Germany until he was released in April 1945.

Towards the end of 1944, he received a letter from home in Scotland informing him that whilst he was a prisoner, his younger brother had joined the 156th Airborne Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden in Arnhem in the Netherlands and was missing.

When he was released and eventually arrived back in England, he found out that his brother was killed in action in September 1944, and that his body was never found. He was only 20 years old.

Robert took this news badly and was deeply affected by his brother’s death for many years - even up to his own death in 1987; he never even talked about it to his family.

This song was written to close the film and to capture how Robert must have felt, and the guilt he must have endured for having survived the war whilst his brother had not.

19 year-old Emily Fern was chosen to sing this song with her beautiful 'haunting' voice.

Tim plays the piano and Mikey Ferbrache plays acoustic guitar, as well as producing the song at Apocalypse Studios in Guernsey.

This track was released on the 29th November 2021 on all major online music platforms (Amazon/ITunes/Spotify/Google Play/Deezer etc) in support of The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, which was particularly busy during World War Two.
