5 of my favourite tunes. "Bird Song" which Bert Jansch wrote whilst touring with Pentangle in America. He said the song was trying to convey his reflections on America and Americans, who he clearly found a fascinating people. "The January Man", originally by Dave Goulder, which follows the wheel of the year from Winter, through Spring, Summer, Autumn and back again to Winter. "Cruel Sister", the name given by Pentangle to "Child Ballad 10", a Northumbrian murder ballad traceable back to the 1600s. "Green and Golden" is the odd one out, being an improvisation by Ralph Towner first recorded in 1997 and not a folk song. Lastly, "The Twa Corbies", a traditional song from Scotland about carrion birds, a knight bleeding out beyond help, but also the stillness and peace of death.
