Based in Bristol, Admin is a seasoned producer and DJ who has released music on labels including Futureboogie, Kolour LTD and Omena Records. One of my highlights was his self-released beauty of a 45 ‘Step Into Light / Reflect + Heal’ which was released last year with support from DJ’s, Luke Una, Moxie and Mafalda.

Founder of the label and party crew Community Disc-O’s Admin is a resident at Bristol’s Crofter’s Rights. His parties have welcomed DJs including Mike Shawe, Frederika & Yadava . Admin is a regular on the Bristol scene and has played clubs across the UK alongside the likes Andres, Moxie, Tone B Nimble & Nightmares on Wax.

ADMIN GOSPEL MIX 2022 (UNIVERSAL RHYTHMS)

This week on The Guest Mix, it’s our pleasure to welcome Will Fox of Soul Brother Records in London. 

As a longstanding staff member of Soul Brother Records, it should come as no surprise that Will has had an unfettered access to a continued stream of records for as long as he can remember.
 
The shop has become a pivotal factor in his musical education, a musical trove in which he continues to unearth dusty rarities. Will has been reissuing music on vinyl for a number of years, working closely with Ralph Tee of Expansion Records, bringing to life the reissue of Keep the Fire Burning by Gwen McCrae, alongside Bobbi Humphrey’s Baby Don’t You Know, The Warriors’ What’s My Destination and the Soul Brother Records reissue of Chet Ivey’s deep-funk classic A Dose Of Soul. Forthcoming reissues include the China Burton brit funk classic You Don’t Care About My Love and a compilation of Epic years material from lesser-known US keysman Webster Lewis, featuring a comprehensive written history of Lewis’ music with insights from cult jazz DJ Patrick Forge.
 
As a multi-instrumentalist—guitar, bass, percussion—arranger, producer and compiler, Will tends to err towards the soulful spectrum of music, angling towards Jazz and its various permutations, unafraid to blend the richly melodic textures of Jazz with the weightier and rhythmically truncated timbres of electronic music—having worked extensively in Berlin and Bristol. Will’s most recent compilation album—released with Dave Lee (FKA Joey Negro) on Z Records—called Breaking the Beats speaks to this musical ethos, a personal compilation of West London broken beat, straddling the gap between electronic music and jazz. Will is also a keen music journalist, with a monthly jazz column in UK’s black music monthly Echoes magazine. He also helms the Soul Brother sound system, having hosted it at the legendary West London venue The Half Moon alongside guest DJs ranging from Alena Arpels to Paul Murphy.
 
Currently, Will is working on a solo project with Cinematic Orchestra Lead Vocalist Heidi Vogel with a distinct Latin feel, an area of music that he feels comfortable experimenting with and a recent wellspring of influence: from the polyrhythms of Cuban and Nuyorican salsa to frenetic batucadas and Brazilian samba. He is also working on a new reissue project with Motherlode Music, a fledgling label reissuing rare and unissued soul and jazz. Off the back of recent sets at Spiritland and Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here festival, Will’s DJ sets are eclectic and bold, bringing together a wide palette of sounds from contemporary jazz and jazz-fusion, Latin, Brazilian, funk and soul. Expect colour, style and deep, unremitting grooves, with the odd percussive element thrown in for good measure.
