William Toll is an independent artist who writes and sings songs with his acoustic guitar. "The rhythm comes first on guitar, then you hum a melody, then you put words to it." "Preferably," he says, "the first words that come to mind.”

"The artist's task is to observe patterns in the created world, pull them out, and echo them in a fresh way—ideally in story form. Art is only valuable if it brings forth some embodiment of reality.”

“Whereas a painter uses a color palette as a basis, a musician uses a deep repository of sounds: a sea of pure potential. Musicians aim to pull out of that chaos something ordered and valuable.” William goes on, “My conception of artistry, you may have noticed, is derived from the Genesis account of creation.”

“By the way,” says William, “I believe all artists ensconce themselves in this process. And they do it to honor God, fundamentally, whether done consciously or not.”
