A few weeks ago, we shared news of Detroit band Will Sessions‘ plans of releasing a new album, The ELmatic Instrumentals. But before you go out and cop that on the 27th (the most diesel release date in recent memory), they’re giving out a free album to give you some background on the crew. Will Sessions have previously produced live shows for fellow Motowners Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, and Black Milk. With this free LP, Real Sessions, you get 10 selected live recordings from those shows featuring the 8-piece band recreating beats from Madlib, J Dilla, Black Milk, Mr. Porter, and Nick Speed (w/ DJ Dez on the cuts). Will Sessions presents “Last Fridays”, a digital collection of material previously released on the Funk Night Records imprint between 2010-2013. The title is a homage to Detroit’s now-legendary Motor City Funk Night party, where Will Sessions was featured as house band and label boss Frank Raines spun extremely rare funk sides to abandoned warehouses full of as many as 4000 sweaty bodies.
Prior to now, these songs have never been available except as extremely limited 45 rpm vinyl, with some fetching modest sums on the funk record market. Represented also are a variety of solo projects from the fold - from the lush cinematic soundtrack vibes of Marcello De Luca (Sam Beaubien), the crime inspired funk of T-Bottoms (the song was actually inspired by Will Sessions bassist Tim Shellabarger being mugged), to the laid back guitar stylings of Picky G (Ryan Gimpert). Included as well are the percussion-heavy breakbeats of Volcano Kpache (Bryan Arnold, Eric Kacir), and a cover of Pearl Dowell’s classic side “Good Things”, handled here with ease by Detroit soul belter, Coko.
The release is intended to sum up what the band has been up to in years prior, but also be a teaser of what lies ahead – a full length funk album of more original material, the next live video/album installment in their Mixtakes series and much more…

After years of making their name on the scene in Detroit, Will Sessions are launching their very own label called Sessions Sounds.  The band will be releasing their debut album of funk originals entitled Deluxe this fall, with future releases spanning everything from funk and boogie to hip hop and jazz fusion, showcasing the unmistakable resonance of the Detroit sound.

The label’s first 7-inch vinyl release will be “Seven Mile,” on which the band teams up with Motor City icon Amp Fiddler for a tune that instantly recalls the lush arrangements of early-70s Motown.   Look out for a full-length LP from Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler to be released on Sessions Sounds in early 2017.

Keeping with their commitment to not be pinned down to any particular genre comes Will Sessions’ latest LP, Kindred Live.The band, along with special guest Amp Fiddler on Fender Rhodes, synth and clavinet, pay tribute to the pioneers of jazz fusion by recreating the songs of genre-defining artists such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report.

The album is composed of material recorded live during two separate concerts at one of Detroit’s most esteemed jazz clubs, Cliff Bells, and the energy of the performances and their effect on the audience practi- cally bursts through the speakers!

Will Sessions have established themselves as one of Detroit’s must-see live bands, with a varied musical output that reflects their city’s roots.

After cutting their teeth as the house band at the infamous Motor City Funk Night parties, the band went on to release a series of singles on the FNR label, as well as LPs like the instant-classic Elmatic, Kindred, and Mixtakes video/album series.
