The Kif Kif Riddim [West Coast Studios - 2014]

And biggup Saj Moor and his West Coast Studios imprint from out of Morocco for their latest release, the Kif Kif Riddim. WCS is interesting and every time you hear from them they're pushing compelling works and this time, which may be their first riddim compilation (to date I always recall them focusing on singles), is no different. The old-school-ish and very familiar Kif Kif Riddim is outstanding and Moor and co. have turned it over to some truly talented vocalists. Like who???! Check Perfect Giddimani espousing on one of his most dear subjects on 'Just An Ounce Ounce', Belizean dynamo Ras Indio with 'Plant Di Corn', and the woefully under-recorded and underrated Arkaingelle with 'Rastaman Ah Chant'. Luv Fyah, Binghi Ghost and Fikir Amlak (especially Amlak with the infectious 'Hi Grade'). Unsurprisingly, however, to my opinion it is WCS staple, Ras Attitude, who gives the Kif Kif its biggest highlight with 'Green Gold Rush'.

As the world celebrates the Earthstrong of His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I on July 23, reggae artiste, King Ital Rebel is out to remind his loyal followers that Jah No Dead in his newly-released single from his debut album, Rebel Chant. 

Released in May via King Ital’s JamrockVybz Records label, Rebel Chant has been positively received worldwide, with a flurry of songs rooted in spirituality, togetherness and survival. Jah No Dead is no exception and combines the three aforementioned elements. 

“Hear the voice of the congo man say, gwaan hol di Sabbath, give thanks and praise,” King Ital Rebel sings as he swears he’s a ‘natty by birth, nah trim nah shave’ as he reaffirms his love for H.I.M. He also warns that ‘Binghi man have no place inna Babylon’ and calls on the masses to stop supporting the very sources of destruction causing strife in Africa - the heart of Haile Selassie’s existence – and across mankind. 
Jah No Dead allows believers to once again declare their dedication toward Haile Selassie and ensuring his name and legacy don’t live in vain while sparking a spiritual awakening in those who doubt the power of the emperor’s everlasting presence.

The first EP coming on Descendant Music is a 10” Vinyl produced by Will Tee, featuring vocal cuts from Judah Eskender Tafari and Christine Miller, a horns cut from The H.U.S All Stars and a Will Tee dub mix.  It has been run heavily on dubplate by Channel One and Iration Steppas since it was made last year.  It can be seen in various videos being played as Channel Ones last tune in dances around the world.

This instrumental dub was run heavily on dubplate by Aba Shanti before being released on the Roots Revelation label in May 2012.

“Black Roots”, the eponymously named debut album, was originally released in 1983 on Kick Records, by which time the band was established as one of the UK's leading live acts with a strong repertoire of socially aware songs reflecting the issues of the day. When it came to their first album, they chose eight of their strongest tracks and assembled what was to become one of the classic British reggae albums of the decade.

Featuring 8 songs “The Father”, “Survival”, “Juvenile Delinquent”, “What Them 'A Do”, “Opportunity”, “Tribal War”, “Africa” and “Move On”, the album covers themes of social alienation, deprivation, repatriation, RastafarI, violence within the black community and ends, with the tale of a failing relationship. Three decades later, many of the songs are just as relevant and provide the perfect complement to their latest recordings.

It was re-issued Bristol Archive Records on vinyl in 22nd April 2013 to coincide with Record Store Day.  The release on vinyl was strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide. 400 copies were made be available for Record Store Day, 22nd April 2013, at participating retailers and feature a facsimile of the original sleeve, whilst 100 copies will be available directly from Bristol Archive Records and very select retailers and feature a unique handmade screen printed sleeve as well as being individually numbered, a very special edition.

This was the first time that this album was available on vinyl for twenty-five years and demand outstripped supply.

This release was made available by Nubian Records on digital platforms. Here is an opportunity to stream or download either this song or the full album that is still in great demand from old and new fans alike.
