For this week's i-DJ, we delve deep into the underworld of house and techno, and even deeper into the world of Boston based duo John Barera & Will Martin. Having just dropped their latest EP, Graceless, on Panorama Bar resident Steffi's label Dolly, the pair further showcase their ability to explore the different aspects of techno and house. "For the mix we each got together around 15 of our current favorites, the 15 records we both had at the front of our respective DJ bags, records to rock a party with. After an elimination process we decided which tunes worked and dove into a back to back mix that highlights what we've been playing in the club recently. It's a mixture of records we found in stores, that our friends gave us of their stuff, records we've bought on the internet and one of our own tunes for good measure. Enjoy."

When you put one of John Barera and Will Martin's records on, you're immediately hit by the bags of emotional warmth and the optimistic spirit that sing through the Boston born pair's collaborative output. Impossible to pin down, it just feels like there's a certain type of magic that happens when the pair combine in the studio and plenty of others would seemingly agree with that sentiment, including one of house music's greatest talents, Steffi, who has backed them aplenty. Featuring one of Barera and Martin’s tracks on her Panorama Bar mix she’s also provided a home to their productions, including their critically lauded LP, Graceless, on her Dolly. 

Currently touring and riding high off the success of the LP their set to land in Room Three as part of a showcase with a UK party they feel a certain synergy with: Just Jack. Here in this mix, the duo show exactly us what happens when they get behind the decks together, interspersing muted house tones with prime vintage EBM and disco.

There’s a wonderful lightness of being to John Barera & Will Martin's productions. Barera's solo contribution to our then-nascent  Upfront series  was a delightful tour through their native Boston, but it's when the pair get together that the magic truly occurs. It’s music tailor-made for planting a smile firmly on two hundred faces as things lift off at 1am, and we're delighted to present the next instalment in their faultless catalogue to the world. 

On releases prior they've plumped for more driving kicks, more arresting vocals, more forthright piano stabs – compared to the likes of "Say It Now" or "It's Alright", "1,2,3 (Feels Right)" is a touch more subdued. It's all relative though, as the track is no less emphatic and certainly no less effective; there's a twinkling lead subtly spiralling throughout, reminiscent of "Ragysh"'s eternal wind-down. The entire EP is killer, and due out on Argot no less – a label that, much like JB&WM, is quietly but diligently establishing a 'buy-on-sight' reputation. Cop it in a few weeks.

Some things just go so well together, you almost wonder if they were ever really apart. There’s gin and tonic, for example, or bacon and eggs, or Cheech and Chong, or…well, the list is long. But you can add one more entry to that catalog: Bostonians John Barera and Will Martin. It was just over a year ago that Barera, a cofounder of Supply Records, teamed with Martin for the highly lauded Yen EP on Supply; its two A-side cuts, “Awake” and "Say It Now," both brimmed with luminous house vibes, while the flip, “Unknown Factor,” boasted more of late-night, basement-party feel. All three, though, were obviously the work of two producers who are in love with the ways of classic house. They’ve followed their love (leaving a bit of time for affairs with disco and techno) in the months since, releasing the poised Graceless long-player on Steffi’s Dolly label and, just this month, the fab four-track 1,2,3 (Feels Right) EP on Steve Mizek's Argot. Barera and Martin have also been gracing the decks together on a regular basis, and they’ve just put together this stroll through house-music land (with time out for funky side jaunts from the likes Wally Badarou and Talking Heads) for your listening pleasure. Continuing the celestial theme of their last EP ‘History Of Space’; the EP is the result of a whole new writing technique and heller time spent jamming on Will’s Chroma Polaris synth. Comprising four tracks that simply ooze machine soul and loose-limbed groovemanship, ‘Life, The Heavens & The Earth’ is an ageless document that digs deep into the foundations while staring out into the cosmos.

The tone is set by ‘The Meaning’ (premiered on Mixmag's SoundCloud now!). Outer planetary electroid savoir faire; its crisp breaks are countered by the bulbous textured bassline throughout. It’s followed by the title track ‘Life, The Heavens & The Earth’; a spatial excursion built around a classic break and coloured with poignant arpeggiated cascades. Deeper into the EP we glide to strike warehouse gold on the venomous acid of ‘In The Depths Of Madness’, a layered analog jam that writhes and slinks dynamically in the spirit of Pierre, before closing with a track the duo feel is their most accomplished composition to date: ‘Searching For Time’. Not just a title we can all relate to but a poignant emotional workout that touches your soul in the same way you first heard the instrumental of Information Society’s ‘Running’. 

Beautiful emotive electronica from a duo who keep getting better with every release. The journey to the root continues….

Whether producing separately or as a duo, NYC-based producers John Barera and Will Martin have proven to be amongst the most exciting rising underground talents in the United States. With a knack for pushing the boundaries of electronic music, they display a uniquely creative approach to house, techno and breakbeat motifs. Their most recent collaboration titled the 'Life, The Heavens & Earth' EP, which follows two albums and a string of EPs, is set for release via 2MR and further explores new writing techniques from the pair. 

Here Mixmag provides the exclusive premiere of the EP's lead track titled 'The Meaning', which sets the tone of the release with infectious breakbeats, piercing electro and a ravey essence. This new material can't be ignored!
