A Place for Us

An Appalachian woman is separated from her husband by the Civil War, and while he is away she contracts a brain fever from a polluted well. He writes her a letter that she clings to, promising to return when the colors change in Autumn. When he returns safely he is devastated to find she no longer recognizes him or their children. Alarmed, he takes her to the nearest mission where she is doctored for twenty heartbreaking years. The woman continually yearns for Autumn, in hopes that it will bring him home, oblivious that he remains steadfast by her side. And so they wait.

Together they wait.
