Girls Of The Internet return to Luke Solomon’s imprint with the tender house track ‘Affirmations’. Their debut release on Classic in 2017, ‘When U Go’, established the group as ones to watch, and in the six years since they have connected house, soul, disco and garage into one recognisable and modern aesthetic. The sweeping cut features vocals from the experienced and versatile Anelisa Lamola, who established herself in the 2021 musical ‘The Color Purple’ and closed BBC Radio 1’s Dance Weekend the following year. 

‘Affirmations’ was co-written by burgeoning UK soul star Sophie Faith, with soulful lyrics supported by an uplifting string quartet arrangement that leaves a lasting impression. With their 2020 album ‘Girls FM’ gaining support from the likes of Pete Tong and The Blessed Madonna, the house band, spearheaded by Tom Kerridge deliver another striking release on Classic.

Superpitcher and Idjut Boys remix Radio Slave’s ‘Wake Up’.

Radio Slave’s spoken word slow-burner ‘Wake Up’ dropped on Rekids March ‘23, winning support from the likes of Roman Fluegel, Louise Chen and Red Axes and continuing a run of singles that explores the house and disco roots of the iconic British UK/Producer. Now, he invites Kompakt affiliate and Hippie Dance co-founder Superpitcher alongside UK duo Idjut Boys to reimagine ‘Wake Up’ on a fresh 12”. 

The original ‘Wake Up’ saw Matt Edwards, aka Radio Slave, utilise low-slung grooves and an iconic speech-like vocal. Superpitcher remixes the track first, turning it into an acid-infused trip with its vocal samples echoing through cavernous, dubbed-out soundscapes. On the flip, we see Idjut Boys turn up the flange in their hypnotic version while maintaining the original’s bassline and stripping back the vocal to eerie whispers.

Classic unveils a two-track EP from enigmatic Texas-born artist Seven Davis Jr. ‘Iss Good / Problematic’. Growing up inspired by legendary Black vocalists Prince, Aretha and Stevie, Seven Davis Jr. honed his classic gospel and jazz training into soulful, electronic house with a distinct artistic edge, garnering attention for his self-released work and ushering in a wave of releases from top labels. In the ten years since releasing ‘Friends EP’ on Classic, the singular artist has worked with Honey Dijon, John Cale, Fourtet, Hot Chip and shared the stage with Moodymann, Flying Lotus and Gilles Peterson. He now demonstrates the evolution of his sound with ‘Iss Good / Problematic EP’, a headsy two-track package spearheaded by the lead, possessing a low-to-the-floor swag rarely seen in house music today. ‘Problematic’ follows, featuring vocals and production from Californian music and movement artist Coflo, another artistic and understated four-to-the-floor thumper featuring ethereal vocals echoing from across the room.

Esteemed selector Jamie 3:26 returns to Glitterbox, revisiting his 2022 collaboration with Melvo Baptiste and Annette Bowen ‘Gonna Be Alright’. On the original, Jamie’s spoken word sections and Annette’s soulful vocals were a perfect match for Melvo’s rare groove and funk-laden style, sparking the attention house’s finest including Louie Vega, DJ Spen, Natasha Diggs and Luke Solomon. One year on, the Chicago legend teams up with regular collaborator Danou P to apply their own production style to ‘Gonna Be Alright’, creating a headsy, understated cut that retains the originals percussive energy with ease.

Matasuna Records has once again unearthed two Latin gems for its latest release: two rare tracks by Argentina-born musician Enrique Lynch. Lynch moved from Argentina to Peru in the 1960s and became artistic director and producer of the Sono Radio label. He released an astonishing amount of albums with his various bands over the span of nearly three decades.

The two songs will be available together on a vinyl single for the first time – and the track from the flipside will also be released on a 7inch for the first time ever, For this official reissue Matasuna was lucky enough to have access to the original master tapes. The tracks were carefully restored and remastered in Lima (Peru).

African Bump is one of Enrique Lynch’s greatest tracks and the original 7inch is much sought after by collectors and DJs alike. The song immediately captivates the listener as the Wah Wah guitar begins to play and enters into perfect harmony with organ and brass. A thrilling disco funk beat, rhythmic percussion elements and a hypnotic hookline spice up the track and show what great musical treasures South America has to offer.

On the flipside there’s a great cover version of the Soul and Funk anthem K-Jee by American band The Nite-Liters, which had a hit with this song in 1971 and even entered the billboard charts. Enrique’s version adds some extra grooves with killer beats and breaks, a heavy bassline and wild percussion parts. A distinctive horn section meets funky guitar riffs and deep organ sounds. A fantastic funk tune that will set any dance floor on fire!
