On Thursday, October 25, 2018, the New Sanctuary Coalition and NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic held a teach-in about the First Amendment rights of immigrants who speak out against the injustices and inhumanity of our immigration system. Hosted at a Brooklyn church founded as a “temple of abolition” against slavery, the teach-in was held in anticipation of an upcoming First Amendment case, Ragbir v. Homan, that was heard in the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Monday, October 29. The plaintiffs of Ragbir v. Homan seek, among other things, a court order restraining the government from deporting and otherwise targeting immigrant activists based on their protected political speech. Thursday’s teach-in unpacked immigrants’ constitutional right to free speech, even as the government lashes out against immigrant rights leaders and activists. Ragbir v. Homan was filed by nationally recognized immigrant rights activist Ravi Ragbir, along with immigrant rights organizations New Sanctuary Coalition, CASA, Detention Watch Network, National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, and the New York Immigration Coalition (the “plaintiffs”).

As alumni of the Transom Story Workshop (http://transom.org), our idea is to create and share stories about the working lives of people today in the US and around the world.  We also want to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the book “Working” by oral historian/radio producer Studs Terkel.  The book is about “a search for daily meaning as well as daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for astonishment rather than torpor; in short, for a sort of life rather than a Monday though Friday sort of dying.”  To honor Studs and his legacy, we want to re-introduce his methodology to a larger audience through a SoundCloud Fellowship demonstration project. Will Coley is an independent radio producer, social media strategist, trainer and videographer based in Queens, NY. 

I’ve been an advocate and organizer with immigrants and refugees in Charlotte, New York/Newark, and Los Angeles, as well as in Zimbabwe and Great Britain, for organizations including Catholic Charities, American Friends Service Committee, Jesuit Refugee Service and Homies Unidos. Through Aquifer Media, I design social campaigns and digital storytelling that cultivate community and civic participation, most recently for Freedom from Fear Awards, Detention Watch Network, Rights Working Group and Public Interest Projects.
