This beats samples "Make it Last" by Keith Sweat. I attempted to flip this sample in the style fo Detroit hip-hop. The distorted 808s and high pitched hihats are very characteristic of the Detroit hiphop.

Make It Last

I wanted to take the song in a direction I hadn’t heard before. I laid down a Jersey Club style kick pattern with a bassline to give the acapella more bounce. While the track doesn't embody all of the characteristics of the Jersey Club style, it definitely draws inspiration heavily.

Disturbia (Jersey Club Mix)

This beat samples Marvin Gayes "What's Going On" and James Brown's "Funky Drummer". I wanted to emulate the production style of DJ Premier and create a beat that embodied the NYC sound that he made so popular. I chopped and pitched up the Marvin Gaye sample and stretched the James Brown drum fill to match.

Whats Going On

This track is my take on an Atlanta trap beat. I used the four count hi-hat intro as an homage to the production styles of Bankroll Fresh. I added dramatic, dark, orchestral strings to give the beat an intense feel as well as a tubular bell that hits on the first beat of every measure. The drums are hard-hitting with a loud boosted 808 that brings them to the forefront of the beat. Overall, I am very proud of this beat and I think it is one of my best this semester.

My third style study beat is a house beat, heavily inspired by Fred Again. I took all of the stylisitic traits of house that I learned about in class and tried to make a beat in the style of one of my favorite DJs. I think I was able to accomplish this week through the hard-hitting drums and vocal chops that are so characteristic of Fred Again's music.

Waiting4u

I created this beat in the style of west coast gfunk. While I understand that typical gFunk beats make use of a pfunk samples, instead of sampling for my beat, I created my own melody from scratch. I think the Rhodes keys paired with a deep bassline and high-pitched synth accomplish this perfectly. I created my own drum break to accompany this melody as well.

San Andreas

This Memphis-style Hip-Hop beat was originally just a melody loop sent to me by contra. I thought the strings that he sent me would pair really well with a sample, so I borrowed this snippet from "Watcha Gonna Do" by Koopsta from Three6Mafia. After layering this sample over his melody, I added a deep sub bassline paired with hi-hats and a snare to really embody that Memphis sound.

I created the melody for this track and Contra added the drums. When building the melody I wanted to try to create an Italo-house sound and attempted to do so using synth keys rather than the traditional grand piano. Additionally I added a vocal one-shot with delay and several other synths and a bassline in order to make the melody more full. Contra did a great job adding hard hitting drums as well as arranging the beat with a hard drop midway through. Overall, I think we killed this one.

This track heavily draws upon the style of Chicago drill. I included several layered synth leads as well as an orchestral background melody combined with an orchestral his to add emotion to the beat. This beat drew from many of the style studies that I underwent during the course of the semester and combined new skills—especially in terms of the percussive elements.

This track is designed to be used by a Detroit hip-hop MC. Rather than sampling an 80s melody to use for the track, I decided to create one of my own as a challenge. I think the plucky synth and electric keys cater well to encompassing 80s funk music and the funky bassline effectively ties everything in. However, in my option, what truly makes this a Detroit beat would be the quick hihats paired with the hard-hitting kick.
