I'm fortunate. Since finding my birth parents, I have an exceptional number of moms, dads, and siblings. My fam is massive! Right after learning the truth, I jumped on a plane to my hometown. Not to confront my adoptive parents but to reassure them. When I tracked down my birth parents, it was because I want to know them, not just an explanation. Things were going great. I was happy. Everyone was happy. Everything was going to be fine.

Except, my subconscious wasn't cool with any of this… at all. In fact, it was very pissed off. Inwardly, my mind was waging war on itself. I had nightmares, lots of them. I didn't sleep a full night for a year. Without realizing it, I became distrustful, suspicious of nearly everyone. Common, everyday situations became dubious. Suspect. I became depressed and I got angry, often. No matter how cool I was with it, my subconscious was telling me everything was definitely not going to be fine. I was losing my shit, and I didn’t even realize it. Yet. The music became dark and sinister.

Before I go any further, I want to describe some of my experiences in a little more detail. Imagine everything you know about yourself is based on a lie. You go your whole life thinking your name is, well, your name, only to learn there's another birth certificate hidden away with a different name on it. In my case that name is Gregory Griswald Tiernan. Imagine talking to your birth parents for the first time while on your honeymoon. Imagine half your grandparents never even knew you existed. It's like a movie, except it's real and you can't turn off the TV after a couple hours of entertainment. It's there, with you all hours of the day and it's never going to go away. You think about it nonstop. You think about all the moments you felt different, like a black sheep throughout your life. All the family medical history you've been giving incorrectly your entire life. All the times the lie could have been exposed, but wasn't. 

You begin to question reality itself.

We completely take for granted the most basic elements of our lives like who we are. I did, until, like an amnesia victim in a soap opera I woke up one morning and didn't know who the hell I was. You go down a deep, dark hole inside your head and wonder if you'll ever emerge the same and the answer is, no. No you won't. You question all the decisions you've ever made, big and small ones alike. Did I do that because of my genetics or because of my upbringing? Suddenly, those nature vs. nurture studies you read in college don't seem abstract anymore. They feel viscerally relevant, but by this point you've spiraled into depression and don't have the wherewithal to deal with it. You go into fight or flight. Do you fight to stay who you are or do you flee to stay who you are?

I respect Juan Maclean, Benga, Ben Pearce, Rustie, Motor City Drum Ensemble, and other DJs who've talked openly about their struggles with mental illness. A recent BBC article puts the particular challenges DJs and producers face in context.

I walked into a psychiatrist's office and told my story. After 10 minutes, she said "Excuse me, but this is the most incredible thing any patient has ever told me. This story is remarkable. I can't believe this happened to you!" The person I reached out to for help had to take a moment to process what I was telling her. That's the moment I realized I was truly in deep shit.

When you involuntarily dissociate from reality it’s like floating above yourself, untethered. You start to wonder if you even know who you are. Whether you’ve ever known. Watching your old self float away you wonder who you’ll become when you wake up.

Knowing You

You don't always get to choose what happens to you in life, but you can choose how you respond to it. The old me had died, and the new me was not off to a very good start. I fell into depression. I started drinking a lot. I blamed my behavior on a lot of things that weren’t the problem. People close to me suggested I see a therapist when I first learned I'm adopted. I did, twice, then quit. I resisted. I didn't think I was "crazy". That was dumb. Finally, after a couple intense outbursts and distancing some close friends, with a lot of help and encouragement from my wife, I began to read about the psychological aspects of adoption and anxiety. I started seeing a therapist and was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. 

Wait. This wasn’t how the story of finding my birth family was supposed to go. I was supposed to be happy, right? Why should I be depressed? I had a great family, a successful business, and I get to DJ for a living. WTF. None of it made sense. I never thought I'd be diagnosed with mental illness. No one does. I faced an uphill journey at this point. To be clear, the anxiety was always there, undiagnosed. I’ve suffered from it my whole life without being able to define it. Learning I was adopted didn’t cause it. It may have exacerbated it, but it certainly brought it into focus.

It's incredibly difficult to talk about mental illness publicly. Even today, people will ask "But you're better now, right?" The stigma is deep and pervasive, which is part of the reason I'm sharing these posts and contextualizing these songs publicly. 42,000 people commit suicide each year in America and countless others succumb to addiction and overdose, and the numbers are only going up. In April, an analysis of Federal Government data revealed U.S. suicide rates have surged to a 30-year high. These aren't just statistics, they're family and friends. We can see the empty spaces in our community.

People suffering with mental illness didn't do anything wrong to bring this condition upon themselves. It's not a virus that's going to make you sick. The silence and shame can be one of the hardest parts. I had no clue, until it happened to me. If you’re suffering, don't let the demons win. Don't let the stigma win. Talk about it and if you hear it, listen. In 2014 and 2015, I was in a psychological free fall. Things gradually started getting better, and ultimately my therapist may have saved my life.

I know what some of you may be thinking. Just focus on the positive things in your life! Just snap out of it. Toughen up. If you have undiagnosed mental illness, it can be impossible to imagine dawn when you're in free fall. By outward appearances, it can seam ungrounded, but anxiety is your mind on fire. You hold on to something, like in my case music. It brings you to sun drenched beaches and perfect nights under blankets of stars, but it’s fleeting. Your family and friends try to reach out to you in the dark and you blindly grasp, hoping to connect to them while the void closes in.

Free Fall

Froggie is the first song on my upcoming album, Hilo. Hilo is the soundtrack to a story of dying while being alive, transforming, and becoming reborn while trying to hold dearly to whom one has been. 

3 years ago, my life changed when I learned I had been adopted. In an instant, nothing seemed real. What I knew about my background was based on a fabrication. In a way, my life had been an illusion. 

I began to distrust reality itself, at the very time I would be forced to recreate an identity. I needed to throw away everything I thought I knew and start over. It was necessary not only to forge a new identity, but also to survive psychologically. In turn, I emerged with a new life perspective and, essentially, a new life. 

From moments of levity over the absurdity of the situation, to deep despair and emotional prolapse, as an artist, I was inspired to work on new music. But toward what end I didn't then know. Without consciously realizing it at the time, I began working on this album.

Hilo is a dialogue of dichotomies: anxiety and adventure, ecstasy and terror, free fall and uplift. Each low answered by a high. The album is informed by the holy trinity of house, techno, and disco, speaking to fans of each, but not beholden to a single genre. Equal parts rave and sofa, dance tracks and indie songs; music to take drugs to, music to fall in love to, music to exercise to, music to exhale to, music to rage to, music to chill to. Music about birth and destruction and the ways we hurt ourselves and others. Songs about yearning and satiation, loss and wealth of spirit. About loving someone more than oneself. The graceful way a simple gesture can save someone's life. The ways we can burn every ounce of energy we have yet keep going. Forever. 

Froggie is named for the raining frogs in the book of Exodus, one of the plagues visited upon Egypt by God to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites from enslavement. The Hilo story begins with me learning the truth--my truth--a truth so strange and unexpected it was like frogs raining from the sky. Afterward, nothing would be the same. 

This is my story, but it is also a narrative--as old as Greek mythology--of anyone or group who has faced crisis and survived, emerging galvanized and more spiritually complete.

Tell Me is the second single from my upcoming album, Hilo. Hilo is the soundtrack to a story of dying while being alive, transforming, and becoming reborn while trying to hold dearly to whom one has been. 

3 years ago, my life changed when I learned I had been adopted. In an instant, nothing seemed real. I would drift into a deep depression. Psychologically, it was too much to bear. During this turmoil, before therapy and support from family and friends ultimately helped bring peace, my wife and I traveled to Barcelona. I forgot about my inner crisis momentarily in this magical city of Gaudí, nightclubs, and beaches. On trains and in hotel rooms, I wrote this--a love song in the midst of a tempest.

Hilo (pron. hē-lō) is a soundtrack of transformation, of leaving who one is in order to become who one needs to be.

In 2014, my life was turned upside down when I learned I had been adopted. Everything I thought I knew about my origin was untrue, a fabrication. As an artist, I began to produce music that became an audio description of my life during this experience, from thoughts and feelings of levity and absurdity, to despair and prolapse. All the elevated emotions are documented here.

To make sense of this surprise life turn and thrive, I had to face the experience of dying while being alive, becoming reborn while trying to hold dearly to whom I'd been. All the while, I gave the experiences within my head a voice through music.

Hilo is named for the town and airport on the island of Hawaii where I first landed to meet my birth father's family. All of the tracks here were begun and edited on airplanes and trains, fitting the transformational aspects of this journey.

Art is identity. I couldn't release this album without giving the listener context for it. What you hear is the inner dialogue of adventure, illumination, anxiety, and facing a terrifying yet ultimately beautiful unknown. 

This is my story, but it is also a narrative--as old as Greek mythology--of anyone or group who has faced crisis and survived, emerging galvanized and more spiritually complete.

Detroit Disco is inspired by the city of its name and its contributions to music. When I first visited, for the Detroit Electronic Music Festival--Movement, I was struck by contrasts of the city--a former powerhouse of technological and cultural innovation living through a long, but impermanent, collapse. 

The track is inspired by nighttime walks around Detroit, through blocks of empty buildings, with sounds of beautiful, visceral music drifting through the air. Hypnotizing my heart. Regenerating the future. 

Detroit will continue to rise and persevere, and music will always be there to lend it a helping hand, and to benefit from its creativity in turn.
