Submissions - Week 4 (Theme: Chorus First)

Like a wildfire, I came over you
and into you. You took my heat inside
your bark, your branches, penetrating through,
and met with dew the heat I tried to hide.

And like the rain that drowned our first few words,
you covered me in consonants and mist,
soaked my skin to wrinkles with your touch
And dripped below my chin when we first kissed.

Like prayers, we skip our love as stones across
the surface of the pond that separates
the five hours our lives diverge, the loss
of touch for six months, pebbles in the lake.

We’re close, we’re far, the distance pricks our skin
And when the cool and calid go lukewarm
I choose to smell your water in the winds
That blow across a hemisphere of storms.

And when my heat cools into smoldered coals
You know how to see my burning glow
Three thousand miles from your London home.
You always see me here. You always know.

We’ll be an engine:  fire, water, steam,
we’ll burn the coal we threw across the sea.
In ten days, pour your water into me,
and inside you my wildfire will gleam.
