I’ve been getting a little stiff and creaky recently, I’m not what I used to be.  Today I had a load of teenagers stomping all over me.  God I hate teenagers.  But I suppose we just have to deal with it – us escalators.  Being an escalator is a daily struggle.  For years, decades, centuries, every day we toil.  Humans don’t know how lucky they are.  We can live forever – but that only means that we’ll never get to retire.  But it does mean we don’t have a duty to old father time to leave behind a legacy, to achieve great things before dying.  We do have a duty to serve humans though.  Having been given the gift of sentient thought and this is what we choose to do?  Taking middle aged women between levels of department stores?  Ah but they love it.  They just love that piece of black rubber in their palms taking them heavenward.  We choose to be enslaved by humans because only when our worth is judged by others do we flourish.  But I don’t care what humans think of us.  They’re complete twits.  They never know whether to stand on the left side or the right side as packs of urchins run by.   They never know whether they want to slowly take tentative steps one at a time, or to jerk to a standstill, as though they’ve suddenly remembered they’ve left the oven on.  Why can’t we be lifts?  Oh but you don’t want to be a lift.  They’re so closed-up and tense.  It’s like spending Christmas with your parents in a shoebox.  Just be thankful we’re not stairs.  But stairs can’t think or feel.  They’re as bad as humans!  Sorry, they deserve more than that.  Yeah – some stairs are fitted with Stairlifts.  Which, although ugly and slow … do have some intelligence.  Like humans.
