I started writing this song when I was eighteen. It is inspired by real events and characters. Every time I perform this song I try to get people to tell a story about a dirty old man they once knew.

Troubadour balladeer of folk, jazz, Celtic and traditional standards, Willow Rutherford has deep roots in the Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver indie music scenes.  She is the former band leader and lead songwriter for the infamous Montreal supergroup, The Subcollisions.  Her style of accordion-folk cabaret is unparalleled.  Willow’s songs have been referred to as “land-locked sea-shanties” with lyrics about hysterical love, historical fantasy, and a sublime mix of playful yet poignant narratives that are both earnest and ironic.

Willow comes by music honestly.  She is the offspring of the late, great pianist Mark Rutherford and the sister of Toronto songstress Calamity Royale.  A chance encounter with a gifted accordion inspired an entirely new range of musicianship and Willow has never looked back.  She has composed soundtracks for documentaries and animated shorts, and has accompanied rising stars The Fugitives, E.S.L., Annabelle Chvostek, and David Simard.  Willow sings in English, French and Spanish and is a master of improvisation, both musically and lyrically.
