Agua Loca

It's a Friday and you are on the way back from class. You get a text message asking you to go out tonight but you have a lot of school work to do. What will you decide?

Versus

Utulivu, meaning calm in Spanish, is an ambient production from Casey Hare, Laura Rychlik, Wil Schmor, and Selina Vesely. It is designed to be played at the Avon River in Stratford, Ontario.

Our sound was influenced by Brian Eno, where he mentions the transition to new music,  stating ‘the process of making music was becoming much closer to the process of painting’. As artists we were enabled to ‘paint’ a sonic environment that highlights the natural beauty of the Avon River leaving the listener blissfully ignorant of the external noise from traffic over the local bridge just meters away. It complements the environment by providing a full sound that will immerse the listener into the natural environment.

The concept was to take the listener on a journey, swaying focus between natural sounds and our own developed ambient undertones. The majority of our sounds were from samples with each carrying its’ own weight in ambient construction. Through a series of panning, looping, fading, effects and trimming we were able to create a natural sound structure. We introduce the production with the chirping of birds and rustling of waters and bring it to a close with the vivid buzzing of a fly. This will transfix the listener from reality to personal reflection and back to reality.

In establishing depth we introduced wind chimes, distant drumming and some low-pitch atmospherics. We recorded Laura’s voice singing a 4-note succession as our harmonizing link. This clip had a more interesting appeal when inverted, and when modified with heavy reverb, echo and delay we achieved an abstract ambient piece, which is heard throughout the production. An adaptive limiter and compressor were applied to the main output to ensure fluidity and consistency. Our production contrasts high and low pitches, short and elongated notes, in a peaceful location not far from the industrial world. We aimed to create an experience which complements the tranquility of Avon River, and modest enough not to overpower it.
