From Mare.e.fresh of #CVCBayArea: Anytime someone asks me what my favorite/most prized records are in my collection, I always point to my banda records, the corridos, y las rancheras in my collection. These songs all played in the background throughout my childhood, I’d hear them at home, at the flea market, at weddings, when we would visit Mexico, at all my favorite places as a kid. Este mix se lo dedico a mis papás, and to that very special time in my life. The last two songs on this mix are songs that according to my parents I would sing, “con mucho sentimiento y emoción” when I was a little kid (Leña de Pirul by Banda Machos, y Nieves de Enero by Chalino Sanchez) to this day some of my favorite songs. Espero que lo disfruten! <3

About SPEEDY: Checka was born and raised in San Diego, Califas a chicana and sicilian selector who has been an avid collector of vinyl for over a decade. With many residencies all over 619. From K Mala of #CVCAustin: I started this set thinking about the cultural connection to Islam & the Middle East in Latin America (thanks colonialism!) and followed the thought to the overlap of latinx musical styles with west african traditions. I invite you to listen and meditate on the connections between the songs and their peoples.

About K Mala: Krystall was born in North Texas and spent nearly a decade in the northeast before settling in Austin. Her time in both places solidified her love of cumbias & norteños and gave her a new-found love of salsa, bachata & exploring all kinds of musical traditions.
