The Lowdown
Phil Weeks and Robsoul Recordings kick off their 15th year in house music with a new three track EP from the main man himself.  Live At Palladium has been the standout track of Phil’s sets over the last few months, always generating a queue of people asking what it is.  You may just recognize the Marvin Gaye sample, which was also previously “borrowed” by Moodymann.  It comes backed with the funk-infused You Want My Love and the soaring, chugging groove of Demain A Jamais, and looks set to get another year off to a flying start for one of the finest labels in underground house music.

Three years on from his latest solo outing, Crazy P founder member Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy returns to House of Disco with a predictably fine four-tracker. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the toughened up, revivalist electrofunk flex of "Wilde Touch", where clipped guitar riffs, crunchy Clavinet lines and colourful melodies ride a rubbery bassline, though the Paper Recordings-era Crazy P deep house/disco fusion of "Still We Are" is almost as impressive. Speaking of Crazy P, lead singer Danielle Moore lends her distinctive vocals to the Imagination-ish Brit-boogie business of "Positive Emotion", while the EP's other track, opener "Synthesize", is a darker and more spaced-out chunk of weighty, bassline-driven nu-boogie goodness.

We can’t say too much about who Lonely Boy is, except that he’s from L.A and has probably had loads of plastic surgery.  He’s released loads of stuff before, but is keeping undercover with this new trendy name.  Oooh secret producers, oooooh. All we need to know is that this EP is bloody excellent, dead classy house music. Another welcome dose of Winding Road’s bouncy musical brilliance

Winding Road Records started life in 2002 with bright eyes and a heart full of deep house, disco, funk, techno, jazz, soul and reggae.

While other labels were refining their ‘sound’, WR went in the opposite direction by mixing up different musical styles, tempos and flavours on each release.  

After releasing 30 lovely singles, the modest little label was once considered (admittedly by a small handful of loonies, and for about 2 days in the mid 2000s) to be one of the most consistently reliable deep house outlets.

The Winding Road catalogue includes releases by deep house household names such as Lovebirds, Spirit Catcher, Vincenzo, Hot Toddy, Shur-i-Kan, Milton Jackson, Schmoov!, Ron Basejam, Rhythm Plate, Office Gossip, Atjazz,  and Crazy P.

The Winding Road sound is unmistakeably ‘house’, but also a secret funk laboratory where anything goes, as long as it’s REALLY good.  By focusing on musicality rather than trendy musical formulas, Winding Road has  encouraged interesting and timeless creations from its artists.

The list of Winding Road’s underground hits to date include Ron Basejam’s seminal ‘For The People, By The People’, Lovebirds 'Want You In My Soul' and 'In The Shadows', Schmoov’s ‘Taking Me Over’, Office Gossip’s punchy ‘Street Talk’ EP, and Hot Toddy’s awesomely groovy ‘Mind Trip’.  Uptempo downtempo midtempo, whatever!

Winding Road doesn’t take itself too seriously.  The music does all the talking.  We aren't very cool.  We'll always be a quiet little label that releases only every now and then.  It's a labour of love and a bit of a laugh, and we like it that way.
