Melbourne’s one and only Emelyne picks up the next Mod Hyp mix series for a two hour excursion of tracks you have and definitely have not heard before - Emelyne is a true selector, her musical palette is vast, unassuming and inspiring. This mix captures her love of dub, dub techno and that original UK dubstep sound we all give the nod to this side of the globe* Emelyne has appeared on Modern Hypnosis line ups since day one and her committed involvement in Melbourne’s music community is widely well received. This is her second offical recorded mix for us but certainly will not be the last!

Birthed from a deep appreciation of Te Taiao, Tūroa is the first collaborative project by Weka Tek and Te Manu. Taking it’s name from Te Ao Tūroa, this three-track EP speaks to the endurance of the long-standing natural world and its interwoven web of relations. With the imminent threat of climate and ecological breakdown, Tūroa is a call to recognise and to be in good-relation with our other-than-human kin. Musically, the project aims to weave taonga pūoro with organic dub techno to evoke a soundscape that echoes the diverse ngahere of Aotearoa. Taking inspiration from Paddy Free and Richard Nunns, Tūroa contributes to the furthering of a uniquely-Aotearoa sound.

I whakatipu ai te rārangi pūoro ko Tūroa nō Weka Tek rāua ko Te Manu nā te whakamiha mō Te Taiao. Ka kōrerotia ēnei waiata ki te tohe, ki ngā hononga hoki o Te Ao Tūroa. Ki te tino whanaungatanga o ngā uri katoa o te ao; ki ngā atua, ki te taiao, ki te tāngata, ki a koe anō. Ko tēnei te whāinga o Tūroa hei te pāha o te hurihanga āhuarangi ki te ao rauropi. He ara mō te pāhekoheko o ngā taonga pūoro ki ngā waiata ā hiko o nāianei ki te whakaata i te wao nui ā Tāne. Nō Paddy Free rāua ko Richard Nunns i whakamanawa ai te orokohanga o Tūroa kia pakeke ai he momo oro nō Aotearoa nui tonu.

The EP begins with Karanga Weka, dropping the listener into the realm of Tāne as bird calls resonate on the forest floor amongst lush synths, a driving dub techno rhythm, and a solitary refrain of the karanga weka. The second track, Hauāuru, is a sojourn to coastal forests where the westerly wind carries melancholic melodies of seabirds, expressed through the pūtōrino kakau rua and kōauau toroa, over a breaks and percussion-infused 4x4 rhythm. The final track, Tipu, concludes the EP by drawing attention to the potency of growth and new life with its ambient dub chords, pulsating rhythm and haunting lead of the nguru uku.

After 15 years in the game, with over 60+ vinyl records pressed, including several "001s", I am very excited to finally be launching my own thing (better late than never hey).

001 - Pugilist - Monument

The concept for Ruff Kutz as an idea came about last year after doing the 3 releases exclusive to Bandcamp as an outlet for my own productions that didn't get picked up by labels. Lots of people messaged me about vinyl. including a big push from dear friend and musical luminary Stormn Norm aka Mr Modern Hypnosis. He put me in touch with Sequence Distribution and they have been amazing to work with - helping me get this off the ground quickly!

The label will be the main outlet for most of my productions going forward - focussing on quality over quantity and with no set rules for a particular sound or tempo: expect the unexpected! The first release encompasses what I think is my sound, and is a nod to my musical past whilst aiming to remain fresh and create timeless music.

Techno influence has always been something I have tried to incorporate into my productions, but I have never released a full Techno track - until now! The A side track 'Monument' is a rolling piece of soulful machine music, made to induce euphoria on the dancefloor with its 10 min run time, Dubby chords, groovy Latin percussion and melancholic pads. Homage to a lot of the 90s and early noughties Techno sounds that I am so fond of!

I couldn't think of doing the first release on the label without at least 1 Dubstep track on it, and given it's the genre I cut my teeth in - I did 2 inna pug-step style. Deep and dubbed out. B1 'Mannequin' is an introspective half-stepper with a laid back, techy feel to it. The staccato sub bass keeps the track grooving under the delicate chords and is sure to get the scoops moving!

On the B2 we have 'Run It' a hazy 2-step style tune (so hot right now) with forward thinking production, an off kilter groove, hypnotic bass and a few classy wubs thrown in for good measure. Think Horsepower Productions meets Livity Sound. Stinky!
