WonderWoman

One of the first tunes I ever wrote, for February Album Writing Month 2006.
Recording's a bit rough, there's distortion & mistakes, but I really like the overall feel.
Played on a Fender Jaguar Custom Baritone guitar through a Boss GT-3 & the Elegoxa CosmoGirl synth plugin...starry twinkles galore!

CosmoGirl

Gee, I haven't posted a finished track to SoundCloud in ages! Put together in less than 24 hours in Bitwig using u-he Hive for bass/chords/lead, plus Microtonic for drums + Battery for obnoxious dub FX.

Hunny Dub

This is a collaboration with Anthony Julius Williams who wrote and sang the lyric & lovely vocal melody. We did a very simple version in 2011 for his one-man show, "Blood is Mere Decoration: A Ritual for Liberation" - a shamanistic exploration of alternatives to America's addiction to incarceration. I always wanted to turn it into a banging tune, so glad I had the chance!

I dedicate this song to Richard Glossip, who has been sentenced to die in Oklahoma, USA for a murder of which he is almost certainly innocent. Just minutes away from his scheduled execution on September 30, 2015, his life was miraculously spared for 37 more days when it was discovered the prison had the wrong mix of chemicals for the lethal 3-drug cocktail!

I had really looked forward to collaborating with Elizabeth in this class, unfortunately she had to drop it a few weeks into the quarter. 
In John Fox' 2010 poetry class, we pulled random words from a pile and wrote poems with them in 15 minutes. 
Everyone's poem was heartfelt, but the way Elizabeth wove together her 23 words was absolutely brilliant!
She sent me this recording over a year ago. I've tried many times to set it to music--this is the first time I'm pleased with 
the results.

Hey Mister Rain

This is a song I'm not sure how to classify, I'll call it a "celestial download."

Made for "Notes On the Wind," a multimedia collaboration with Jen Jastrab and Catherine Baumgartner. From January - July 2012, we created a site-specific piece about the marina in Emeryville, CA. We visited the marina every couple weeks, meeting people, communing with nature, creating art, making audio/video recordings.

The process inspired me to write a number of pieces celebrating the wind and waves, the sunlight, and other aspects of the site. I wanted to make something that acknowledged the Native American presence in Emeryville, where a mall now sits on an ancient sacred shellmound.

Since reading David Abrams "Spell of the Sensuous" I've been exploring the ritual power of chanting on different vowel sounds. I recorded several wordless vocal chants that fit the mood, and felt like they came from the Native spirit of the place. I processed a track of whistling and received the image of a bear and a duck teasing a hunter with their whistles. Yes, I'm a cosmic art-school hippie!

This piece came from a place beyond me, I hope it transports you there, too!

Your Underwear

This song is about an experience I had as a freelance bassist. I had a well-paying regular jazz trio gig in the bar of a swanky local hotel. We were there mostly for decoration, and the three of us never gelled together as a group (over the course of 6 hours/weekend for 9 months)! For the first 6 months the pianist would get lost every other tune. The drummer was a kid who had good technique but just didn't listen. To keep himself interested he would sabotage the music by, say, breaking into a reggae or surf-rock beat right during the melody of a jazz ballad. I'm not saying I'm the best bassist ever but I know what my job is (keep time/form, be true to the style, play the chord changes) and it was impossible to get the music happening with this group.

Recorded on my trusty Tascam 424 MKIII 4-track. I did guitar/vocals/whistling in one take and overdubbed the upright bass. I got a little reverb by miking my piano with the sustain pedal down while playing the mix through speakers.
