Disquiet Junto Project 0536: Metaphor Play
The Assignment: Take a favorite figure of speech as a creative prompt.

The short story: Good Things Take Time, and so did this.

The long story: This was planned to be "My Memory Seems To Be Clouded" and it mainly consist of Bastl SoftPop2 recordings (sometimes via MI Clouds) plus some Drum VST, but I somehow did something wrong with the recording. In Reaper it was 4 Minutes and normal, after exporting it was 4 Minutes and way too fast. Just scaling down the tempo to the half didn't work, as the stretching algorithms destroyed the sound in a way I didn't like. I was sure that the problem was just some setting anywhere, but I was no able to locate it. I started things new, reinstalled things, re-arranged the crazy Mac aggregate device and so on, and after some time even old tracks had a wrong tempo and I checked my coffee for psychedelic mushrooms. At the end it was something with "96khz versus 48khz" after I had used another recorder for line recording this week. Learnings: Reaper has a general setting for the sample rate of recordings and a project based setting for only this project. Wave editors like ocenaudio can change the sampling rate without changing the lenght, editors like Audacity can change the sampling rate so that by reducing it to the half the track is double the lenght – and no stretching is needed, all samples are saved. By some unknown quantum karma this turned out to be the conversion I needed, although it is now 8 minutes. Fun fact: So at some stage Reaper definitely showed a wrong lenght, and I remember that I already thought "this somehow sounds longer than 4 minutes … is it ambient or just boring?". Anyway, it took some time to get this result as wanted, because Good Things Take Time (which may more be more of a proverb that a metaphor, but I did'n want to emphasize the Valley Of Dispair subtext …).

Disquiet Junto Project 0537: Penitent Honk
The Assignment: Do sound design for “a missing gesture” of vehicular life.

I bought this little pink plastic horn (current picture) at a flea market a few years ago, thinking it might one day be of musical value. And I should be right. For three days now I have tried to create an apologetic sound with the horn, and out of 10387546 samples I have chosen this one as the most convincing. It is slowed down to 0.25%, and for purely scientific reasons and consideration of future noisologist, I have added the original sound at the end. The reverb and the background noise is the ambient noise of my home office/studio, and I think the Mac decided to start it's backup on this very recording. Anyway, I find the sound of the horn sufficiently remorseful and repentant.

Disquiet Junto Project 0552: The Radio in My Life
The Assignment: Record music in response to a John Cage and Morton Feldman conversation.

This was fun. I thought about intrusions. Mostly it's the loud street in front of my window and kids running in the flat above mine and people shouting at Siri, Alexa and OKgoogle in the backyard.

I checked my field recordings and there it was: the f… church bells. A bad ambient track, repeated relentlessly every sunday, never changing, a transcendent single-track playlist … 

I threw the field recoding of the bells into deCoda, and it calculated Aminor and 84bpm. I started a track from scratch with these parameters and improvised some beats and pads. The idea was to have a peaceful ambient track … that could be disturbed by acoustic intrusion of the church bells. 

The track seemed finished when I read the algorithm again and listened to the Cage-Feldman-Talk. I liked the pure oddity of the first minutes, so I added some parts of the beginning, accepting that this will draw focus to the conversation, so I didn't care that you don't understand much. 

Next sunday at seven, they will play my track …

Disquiet Junto Project 0554: Cage Chord
The Assignment: Riff on a chord by John Cage.

I split up the chord into a fistful of Ableton Live tracks, all with (not too) different Kontakt instruments and placed them in space by pan and reverb. Every note had a chance of being played of 50% per 90bpm bar. Some noise was added because I felt it being too clean, accepting that this and too much movement would maybe not correspond with the spirit of Cage's piece. An export was done and the mix happened in Reaper, where a Valhalla Delay with 4 bars lenght on the master track repeated whatever is played to smear the notes into each other. The result was the 8 minute track https://soundcloud.com/winterer/chord-cage. I took a 3 minute part out of this and made it into a loop by adding the beginning to the end to comply with the rules. The Loop version was intended to be a byproduct; after listening to the looped version looping for half an hour while creating the cover I'm not so sure whether I really prefer the long Chord Cage, which works standalone with no context, over the Chord Cage Loop, which can be played virtually endless.

Disquiet Junto Project 0566: Outdoor Furniture Music
The Assignment: Imagine the ur-ambient Erik Satie musique d’ameublement concept en plein air

I listened to some of Eric Saties tracks for musique d’ameublement, like Tapisserie en fer forgé and knew, it has to be very repetitive. I was lazy and took a track I was already working on and cut away everything non-repetitive, plus I changed the instrumentation to something more orchestral and Satie-esq and the key to Am (in which Carrelage Phonique seems to be). I wanted it to have beauty and regular irregularities. I added some field recordings (from France ;-) to give a feeling of listening to this musique d'aménagement de jardin outdoors. Like all good wallpaper, the pattern repeats loopable.

The Assignment: Make a beat that someone else will add to.

On ebay I shot an old, rancid, scuffed Casio PT-1 as a restoration object for the holidays. It came yesterday and at the same time the disquiet junto mail came in. And it worked. Ah, I liked these rhumba rhythms like I did 40 years ago. Originally I just wanted to contribute that. But then I recorded a 4 bar loop and used 4 tracks on reaper to play around with some fx. I exported it and gave it some structure in Reaper.  It's now only the original loop plus fx. I think there is plenty of room for a second voice. 

The pure PT-1 is hearable in the beginning. I also put the original loop to https://freesound.org/people/krakenkraft/sounds/665090/ 

It's plain vanilla 120bpms.

The idea was to use a lot of recycling echos and granulars on a PD piano sample, in this case Sampler, Silo, Fragments, SpaceCraft, Small Winters, Valhalla Delay.

Sometimes you don't hear the simple handiwork that went into a track, and I'm not usually the teller of the background story. But in this case, the sequence was a WAV I found in a UseMeLater folder, and I remembered doing the tape effects for real with a modified 4-track recorder some years ago. I liked the recording and wanted to use it. But the slowed down and wobbly tape had changed the character of the sequence so much (and constantly changing) that I couldn't actually use it anymore (hence UseMeLater). And even now, I never was able to return to the original scale or speed. To get the synchronicity I wanted, I had to cut the 2-minute sequence into many short snippets, mostly 4 plucks, and glue them back together, which was an epic job. On the other hand, the now very different sound (compared to the source, I think it was the then new Korg NTS-1 I was testing, as digital as 0101) was worth the effort.

Disquiet Junto Project 0614: Alternate Route
The Assignment: Do something you often do, but differently.

Owners of Pianos may laugh, but to throw in as much as possible instrumentation (sometimes more than one to a motive) with all those plugins and hardware toys becomes so much a second nature, that I thought I should do it differently. So this is a simple track that only uses the Puremagnetik VERV Sunbaked Tape Loop Synthesizer with the same settings for all voices. To make the voices more distinguishable I had to enhance some bass here, reduce some noise there, both with Reapers RealFIR, the gross motor axe of my choice. Some FX plus mastering plugins. "AmdPadic" because the filename started as something with "ambient pads", before it became what it is, and I liked the sound of "empathic" I can hear in the track title.

Disquiet Junto Project 0622: Know the Shadow
The Assignment: How do you depict a shadow in sound?

I started playing around in the DAW and somehow ended up with old step samples. The simplest idea of musical shadows are certainly delay and reverb, and initially I built a (virtual) modular thing behind the steps that changes the shape of the steps but still lets us think of the original, just as shadows only hint at what cast them.

The second idea was the drums, and what could be the shadow of a drum kit? I used a looping noise sample (coming in very late, and not too loud) and carved out a kind of kick drum with negative noise using filters, so the absence of sound is the shadow here. I'll tell you why it has to be like this at some point far, far away … 

The third idea was to use two different types of motifs in one scale: An FM synthesizer using only the black keys of a blues scale (the real thing), and a classic basic saw synthesizer using only white keys (the shadow). 

Em ... and in general: first comes the real and then you hear the shadows, and in the end there are only shadows, because the word also stands for a kind of vague memory that continues to have an effect even after the real has disappeared. And remember, samples are shadows of real sounds …

The result is undoubtedly overly intellectual and musically not a gem. But it wouldn't be experimental music if the experiment couldn't - as here - go badly wrong. That's why I kept it under 3 minutes ...

Disquiet Junto Project 0624: Fresh Pair
The Assignment: Combine two influences, however disparate they may be.

This piece of music is a fusion of two opposing philosophical influences: Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Nietzsche. The Kant motif is structured and simple, reflecting his emphasis on rationality and moral imperatives. It has a friendly tone consistent with Kant's belief in ethics. His motif also has a preachy element that is meant to remind us of Kant's belief in universal laws and also that his writings are frankly quite boring. In contrast, the Nietzsche motif is darker and wilder, reflecting his challenging and often provocative and mostly interesting ideas. The more chaotic (and randomnized) nature of his motif reflects Nietzsche's commitment to individual will and his rejection of social norms (or even his own ideas). However, they also had some things in common, such as a great interest in the emerging natural sciences or the fact that they struggled with the idea of a God. Ultimately, the Kantian theme prevails and has the last word, as Nietzsche is frowned upon for influencing the difficult to understand and often misunderstood "Ubermensch" idea, whereas today we (some of us) actually try harder to act according to Kant's theory of reason, even if a glance at the news teaches us that we as humankind simply don't succeed in doing so.

The Assignment: Record the second third of an eventual trio.

This years beginning was full of work and I missed 1/3. This time I did not want to miss the collaboration. I went with Daniels piece https://soundcloud.com/daniel-diaz/live-bass-soundscape-disquiet0636 simply because I liked it and I wanted to know what would come out if I tried it - if I would not like the outcome I would go on to another piece. I improvised a first track with a Hydrasynth Explorer. A second track is the rattling of a napkin ring with rattling shells on it, which I had bought in France just for this purpose. I went with my gut feeling until I had the feeling that I couldn't contribute any more. I always liked it in every step, probably because it's DDs. I think there is still room for a third person with something unusual.

I played different instruments but nothing worked for me. So instead I used old samples, a recording of a turnstile on a train track near Munich and a door that creaked wonderfully in the wind near Assisi, Italy. It seemed to me to fit in wonderfully with the duo's palpable spatiality.

Last week I had a workshop in the alps. I recorded some cow bells (around 5 minutes, early in the morning) that I liked very much (I instantly thought: this is pure ambient, even without any addition). I added some reverbs and other things to alienate them. I consider this drone, because it's always the same cow bell sounds. I think they do pretty well as "daylight drones"…

Fun fact: Because the musical mind of Soundcloud is just a few femtometres long, this track is apparently classified as ASMR. That's the only reason why I tagged it afterwards.

That was difficult because I actually try to ignore rules all the time, but of course I know that I surely follow rules, that are just invisible for me at the moment.

So I started making something ugly because I always try to make "beautiful" music. The first results were so ugly that I couldn't stand it. 

I started minimizing the noise but tried to keep it erratic, discordant, unstructured (yet some structure crept in anyway). At some point it felt unfinished, but somehow like a chartbreaker for the insane top10. Thats where I stopped.

The Assignment: Re-record and re-compose an organ improvisation by Daniel Glaus.

First I did a recording of a portable speaker output, recorded by a Zoom H1 in a Microwave. It somehow had a crazy humming in it. I recorded two sessions with the Zoom, recoding from the MacBook Speakers. And I tried to record with the Zoom the Output of earpods and changed the sound by holding the earpods closer or further away. All the time the windows were open, which explains the noise. The idea was to have organ-ic elements in it that are as improvised as the recut of the recordings.

Disquiet Junto Project 0661: Consumer Drone Product
The Assignment: Record a piece of drone music using sounds from your home.

I hadn't read the task properly and therefore recorded all kinds of things in the flat, and it's also the case that I'm currently living in Vienna and the flat is very minimalist: apart from the fridge, dishwasher and kettle, I don't have anything electronic that makes sound. (What is perceived as ‘minimalist’ here...) This two-part composition is dominated at the beginning by the fridge, which is slowly attacked by the kettle at around 3:00, which the dishwasher uses to push itself into the foreground (which is of no use to it, however, because that damn fridge can also be heard on the dishwashers recording). The squeaky floorboards of the flat, the sound of the stairwell being cleaned and the ambience of my balcony provide some consumer cosiness. The drummed upholstery of the sofa (at least somehow also a consumer good) serves as the bass drum in the second part. Some stacking of sounds, a little bit of FX. And yes, it's too long, but isn't the sound of this fridge wonderfully apocalyptic? It also hit me hard that I had to fade out the gurgling water drain at the end to at least get it under 9 minutes...

It's a simple remix from an unreleased ambient track, that was planned to have two silent noisefloors, one abstract, one of me walking trough leaves. It's now shorter, and I killed the abstract noise floor; the walking trough leaves is now dominant, the two tracks of music are now in the background.

Disquiet Junto Project 0675: Arc of the Drone
The Assignment: Record a drone that goes from simple to complex to simple.

A few years ago, I was addicted to drones. I stopped doing it because I felt I had nothing more to say with it. So it was fun to make one again. It's a single note from a single synthesizer, of course, and the complexity is added by half a dozen of different parameter modifiers on the synth and some fx. I want to mention that this is not the first time I've asked myself: What is complexity? For one thing, certainly the absence of simplicity and the presence of information. This somehow led me to use a bitcrusher for the first draft. I started with fewer bits, because simple means less information, and then allow more bits, which means more information thus more complexity. The result shows listeners how stupid the idea was, and not just because the reverb was behind the bitcrusher. The artefacts of the lower bit rates at the beginning and end seem to increase the complexity, ore something else. So at the end it may not sound like it's going from simple to complex to simple, but it actually is. For me, it was a strange adventure, but I like the result.

Originally I just wanted to make five minutes of interchanching deep pad and noisy something, with a lot of non-silent space between them. I added some ambient field recordings in these spaces, because the name of the track was intended to be 'The Impossibility of Being Silent'.

But then my mi clouds produced some sounds of it's own and I liked it. At the end I had to reintroduce silence to all parts. All in all I hope this to be considered as a tentative approach to silence, with an increase towards the end.

Gliese 1061 is supposed to have 3 planets a, b and c, orbiting around he star itself, partly in the circumstellar habitable zone. The track uses mainly three sounds, which try to meander beetween habitable and inhabitable, more in terms of rhythm then of noise and dissonance. It maybe could have been more inhabitable, but for me it really feels perfectly inconvenient. ;-)

Disquiet Junto Project 0469: [Missing in Caption]. The Assignment: Make music that pushes the constraints of descriptive television captions.

In one scene of this old war movie, the man is saying goodbye to go to another well-founded, short and successful war, and his wife is deeply worried.

The bells call to battle, the wife struggles to find parting words, and even the worn-out VHS tape is deeply moved.

[overly heartbreaking farewell music] ____ [disquiet0469]

Disquiet Junto Project 0475: Low End (4 of 3). The Assignment: Remix a trio by doing forensics on its component parts.

When I heard some results from disquiet0472, I had instantly some favourites, but choose to go on with a RNG track. This time I ignored some rules by going back to the tracks from disquiet0472, where I had considered to build on https://soundcloud.com/noimspartacus/orphaned-loop-disquiet0472?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0472 (very minimalistic) and https://soundcloud.com/k-blamo/recording93disquiet0472 (just awesome), and by accident I this time stumbled upon https://soundcloud.com/anotherbenjamin/disquiet0472-paper-jam?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0472 (great theme).

All sound sources come from these three tracks.  I started with cutting out loops, went on to looping in Ableton, exported to stems and mixed in reaper. I was not pleased with the harmonica loop from Ableton (all loops were triggered by probabilities) and remixed the cutouts in GleetchlabX and added the results. Then I added the usual reverbs and fx.
