This release of this compilation is concurrent with our public unveiling of the glitch.cool music label and serves as its first official release. This label will be our directly artist-controlled outlet for releasing what we hope will be the most cutting edge in hyperglitch and other left-field electronic music and we have already planned a solid lineup of internal glitch.cool staff releases. We cannot wait to further deploy this project as a collective statement of our artistic vision.

We hope to use this as a hub for accessing all of our content, which currently includes free music, free tutorials, and resources, as well as a new section to accommodate output from the incredible glitch.cool Discord community that has been building over the last two years. The Body is a Prison is a deep dive into an emotional inner world, seemingly just as ready to explode into violence as it is to crumble in despair, but still somehow floating on a sense of wonder. Insane sound design glitches interject beautifully composed piano and synth layers, weaving together into some sort of enormous mechanism. Rhythms coalesce and fall apart, melodies float between seemingly infinite states, everything reshaping itself as we go deeper and deeper into the imagined world. Everything from the cohesive sonic palette, to the flow of each song and phrase, to the journey of the whole album has been considered in incredible detail. If this is Amaranth Todd’s early work in hyperglitch, I think we should all be excited for (and afraid of) what’s to come.

Amaranth’s sound design, oscillations between obscured and clear pulse, dynamic forms, and mosaic layers are exactly what I imagine when I think of hyperglitch, and is exactly the type of music Philippe Macnab-Seguin and I have been working on outlining in our forthcoming paper about Hyperglitch and Aural Sonology. All the while, Amaranth’s many years of musical experience bring new and exciting ideas to the style. The Body is a Prison launches my imagination into a world where we could have whole event line ups and labels of hyperglitch, and many communities and resources for new artists that are interested in learning the techniques, all helping to establish the edges of the genre while simultaneously expanding it.

Repetition and consistency cement themselves often by accident. The ritual is undertaken not for the sake of establishing a persistent pattern but simply because it is a good idea in itself.
Upon establishment, the tradition’s justification warps inward and begins to presuppose itself. The deed is complete because it is tradition to do so.

It is done this way because that is the way it has always been done.

This is not a trap into which we allow ourselves to fall. Novelty is, conversely, a tradition for us. The terrain of GLITCH is rich and varied and it would be shameful to never venture.
Glitch With Friends: Compilation Volume 3 is, for us, the latest ritual in a tradition in which a key constant is an inexorable expansion of our own horizons.
