Learning Production Song Log

This is a one-take 45 minute practise session I recorded for fun. It's a good mix of neuro, liquid, and dancefloor. My goal was to be able to do a whole one-take and recover from any mistakes I made along the way. Also I wanted to practice sequencing songs to do good transitions between sub-genres. I fucked up a few things here. There are some questionable transitions and once where I played a song at like 80% volume for a good third of it at least somewhere around halfway through.

One Take Practice Session

My goal in this practice session was to have a more gradual build up in energy throughout the set instead of having random early spikes.

Practicing Every Day Keeps Anxiety At Bay

In this set, I DJ while having to pee from the very beginning. This is the ultimate test. Maybe next time I can do 1 hour. This is the key to unlocking full mastery of your mind, body and soul.

Do you ever think about how long you could hold your pee?

In this mix, I worked on phrasing, and differentiating when to use Low-end EQ transitions vs mid/hi EQ transitions. I feel pretty good about this mix actually. A few vocal clashes and one or two transitions a touch out of phrase, but the basics are starting to feel consistently good.

I also used a loop -> tempo reduction transition to go from DnB (that is really 175 Techno) -> Hard Techno, and it worked relatively well imo. I don't really have the techno library to play more than a few songs atm, and I basically get stranded in a specific key unless I transition back to the same song, but it feels like a promising way to add some genre-variety to my sets.

Mitochondrial Burnout

I recorded my NYE performance at a house party full of some of my closest friends. It was a wonderful night :D

I turned a few instances of weird mic interference way down, because just killing it felt odd. I also reduced the midnight countdown volume to match the rest of the waveform so it doesn't hurt to listen to, although it is still certainly clipping lol.

If it sounds a little different for the first 8 or so songs, it's because I had to re-record it after, as I forgot to press the button at the start O.o

Also, I feel pretty good about this set, but during the "Shadowban" -> "You Choose" transition, I got distracted by a redlining audio channel and was fiddling with a trim knob when I should have been mixing, so that's why the track stays in too long and gets pulled out abruptly xD

Rhizome Patchwork May 25th

This was a set I recorded on January 4th, 2025 for a friend's new years house party. I played the 11:00 pm to 12:30 am time slot. It was a lovely time, full of lots of close friends as well as plenty of cool people I had never met before. The sound setup was in his living room (and provided for by Opening Move), with speakers way too big for the space (the ideal setup). I think this set showcases my music taste, and it's evolution over the last year very well, as well as a tonne of fantastic artists including some super underrated ones. I am proud of how this came together in the end. There were no glaring mistakes, and the small ones I did make, it feels like I managed well and are hard for me to pick out unless I am listening very carefully at the exact moment they occur. Baby's first song

I've been playing around with Abelton lately, and it's been a lot of fun. This took me about 6-8 hours total, and is the simplest (and shortest) song of all time. That being said it was a lot of fun to make, and I think it sounds decent for what it is. This process made me really appreciate how long you can spend obsessing about little audio esotera, or on arrangements, only to realize you've been rabbit holing on 1 of 8 channels for a 15 second snippet of a 90 second track xD. 

I figured I'd make it public so I (and whoever cares) can see my improvement over time (hopefully that will happen lol).

Paranoid Persistent Fears

I decided to try and make something a bit more minimal in terms of density as well as general feeling where I could experiment with making a wider variety of sounds, especially in the mid-bass frequency range. I also continued to experiment with different drum patterning, and I think it turned out pretty well :D

Contradictions

As we accelerate towards whatever it is we are accelerating towards, I decided to make something faster and harsher. I love industrial hardcore and crossbreed, and always wanted to learn how to piece together a tune in that vein. It was a tonne of fun to make! I hope you enjoy it. :D

I have been working on this track for a while. It's kind of a mess, but I kind of like it that way. It feels appropriately scattered and disorienting. One moment there is a well worn groove, and the next it is thrown out. Is it good? Who knows. Enjoy?

I was listening to a bunch of technoid recently, and I thought it would be fun to test my understanding of what makes that sub-genre what it is by making a track in that vein. Also I recently watched Total Recall 2070 (underrated gem of the era) and wanted to pull some samples from a favourite episode. This is what these two directions brought me to, and I think I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Self Termination

Hello. I wanted to record a set that would represent a "project declaration". Meaning, this is meant to show off specific influences I have from the musical landscape, demonstrate where I think my own music fits into said landscape, and also provide an example of what kind of tracks I would play out. This is more of an example of what I might play in a higher energy, later slot in a night :D

Expect to hear some darkstep [or skullstep if you are feeling //e|d|g|y//], neurofunk [this genre means too many things now], technoid [fake, old, necromancied from 2002, obscure, hard to find, is this just neuro?], some deep/dark/minimal/techy drum and bass for pacing [we need more adjectives to lump together here instead of creating a cohesive genre name], and a splash of crossbreed [DnB's double salted black liquorice].

There are some unreleased tracks by myself that I think are just barely good enough to put in a mix :D. 

I had a lot of fun making this mix, and I hope you find something you're looking for in here.
