The great movie-star, Bela Lugosi, came to the UK for a last hurrah, re-visiting his most famous screen role, that of Count Dracula, but this time on stage. The show was full of spectacular special effects and Lugosi was pitted against a troup of unexperienced, but enthusiastic young, British actors. Each night, before the show, he would appear from behind the curtain as himself and decry the dearth of blood oranges in each town they visited. Backstage, though, he was depressed, injecting morphine, and arguing bitterly with his wife. It showed, as across the run - a run that ended early - the camp performance inspired mostly giggles from the audience. In Belfast, though, grieving, fear-stricken Belfast, they screamed!
