11th Hour - Illicit VIP (LOCUS022)

This one is by far the most complete project I've worked on yet. Learnt so much throughout the past 2 months spent on it. The idea behind it was to use Valve's 1998 game Half-Life samples and make something cool out of them whilst keeping true to the 140 sound I wanted to go for.

These games have been a huge influence on my art ever since I was a kid and I'm definitely going to keep referring to them going forward.

Ich hatte meine beste Freundin in Freiburg besucht, und wir sind wandern gegangen.

Wir kamen auf die Idee ein paar Foley-Sounds aufzunehmen (=Geräusche aus der Umwelt, die man für Tracks oder Sound-Design allgemein nutzen kann). Wir hatten ein kleines Arsenal an lustigen Gegenständen, mit denen wir die Geräusche recorded haben, unter anderem auch ein spezielles Gerät, welches sehr spannende Schwingungen erzeugt, die nicht nur die Ohrmuschel zum beben bringen sondern auch die Seele und den Körper. Die meisten Sounds die ihr hört sind unsere eigenen Aufnahmen, die lediglich mit Effekten bearbeitet wurden. So entstand die erste Version dieses Tracks.

Der Name Fruck ist durch einen Tippfehler entstanden. Sicherlich muss ich euch nicht erklären, wie er eigentlich heißen sollte. Die ersten Versionen waren deutlich mehr „In-Your-Face“, doch dann gefiel mir die erste Sektion nicht mehr so ganz, und ich ließ das Projekt ruhen – bis ich eines Tages die gesamte Struktur des Songs verändert habe. Nicht nur hatte ich ein paar heftige Schicksalsschläge erlitten, sondern war das Jahr 2025 allgemein auch sehr herausfordernd, voller Veränderungen und Umbrüche. Also tat ich das Einzige, was mir half, um mit meinen Emotionen klarzukommen: Ich schrieb Musik und machte aus dem einstigen „In-Your-Face“-Track eine Sound-Design-Story.

Womit ich schon immer zu kämpfen hatte, ist Perfektionismus. Er hindert mich in vielerlei Hinsicht daran, simple Songs zu kreieren geschweige denn diese zu veröffentlichen. Dieser Track ist ein Paradebeispiel dafür: Ein endloses Rennen gegen mich selbst, bei dem ich immer wieder dachte, dass er nicht gut genug sei und ich hier und da noch etwas verändern müsste, anstatt ihn einfach in seiner Vollkommenheit ruhen zu lassen.

Deshalb habe ich mich entschlossen, diesen Track und sein Gegenstück "Don't need a harmony" nächste Woche zu releasen, als Zeichen meines Vertrauens zu mir selbst und meiner musikalischen Vision.

I visited my best friend in Freiburg, and we went hiking.

We came up with the idea of recording some Foley sounds (noises from the environment that can be used for tracks or sound design in general). We had a small arsenal of funny objects that we used to record these sounds — among them a special device that created fascinating vibrations, not only resonating in your ears but also deep within your body and soul. Most of the sounds you hear are our own recordings, only processed with a few effects. That’s how the first version of this track came to life.

The name Fruck came from a typo. I’m sure I don’t need to explain what it was originally supposed to be called. The first versions were much more “in your face,” but at some point, I didn’t like the first section anymore and decided to let the project rest — until one day I completely restructured the song. Not only had I gone through some tough personal challenges, but the year 2025 itself was also very intense, full of changes and transformation. So I did the only thing I knew to cope with my emotions: I wrote music and turned what was once an “in-your-face” track into a sound design story.

Something I’ve always struggled with is perfectionism. It often stops me from creating simple songs, let alone releasing them. This track is a perfect example of that — an endless race against myself, constantly thinking it wasn’t good enough and that I needed to tweak things here and there, instead of simply letting it rest in its own completeness.

That’s why I decided to release this track and its counterpart Don’t Need a Harmony next week as a symbol of trust in myself and my musical vision.
