06 Ground Work

With an unparalleled style of rhythmic expression, Willie Jones III is one of the world’s leading jazz drummers.  Jones also proves to be one of jazz music’s most important producers as he was named in recent Downbeat Critics’ Poll Rising Star Drums and Producer categories.

In addition to honoring his monumental influences - the late greats Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey and Billy Higgins - Jones’ bold articulation and innovative sense of swing are results of his life-long musical experience.
 
In 2000, Jones founded WJ3 Records and has released six of own CDs as a leader and those of his contemporaries including Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon, Jacques Lesure, Eric Reed, Justin Robinson and more. 

On Groundwork, his sixth CD as a leader, Willie Jones III convenes living legends Buster Williams (bass) and Eddie Henderson (trumpet), virtuosos Eric Reed (piano) and Steve Davis (trombone) and rising stars Warren Wolf (vibes) and Stacy Dillard (saxophones).

On  this special recording, Jones explores the works of Cedar Walton, his former bandleader; Ralph Penland, an early mentor; and Dwayne Burno, Jones’ contemporary and former band mate. Dedicated to these great figures in jazz, including Mulgrew Miller, Groundwork also includes original tunes by Buster Williams, Eric Reed and more. 

Of his 2013 release, The Willie Jones III Sextet Plays the Max Roach Songbook Live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the New York Times said, “the strongest thing about [this] strong album… is the intense, ordered, disciplined energy of Mr. Jones as an improviser of trap-set concertos.”
