Philadelphia DJs lil'dave (Illvibe Collective) and Personify (Little Big Things) have joined forces to bring you Gotcha Covered - a genre bending mega-mix of covers songs from the mid-60s to the present. With more than 35 years of DJing and music collecting between them, these fellas dug deep in their collections to pull tracks for Gotcha Covered and spent months mixing, cutting and blending together more than 90 covers spanning Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, Latin, Bossa Nova, Boogaloo, Reggae, Steel-Drum Band, Brass Band, R&B and Hip-Hop, to name a few. From the super rare to the under-appreciated and forgotten to the more common cover versions, Gotcha Covered offers up something for the serious digger and the casual listener alike. If you love good music, stop what you're doing, grab a copy of the mix, and prepare to be taken on a tour of some of funkiest and most soulful covers ever laid down. In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This sixth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s which is not entirely easy to define. Loops of popular Hip Hop records arranged into club-friendly instrumentals, in their day these tracks were mostly referred to simply as ‘Breakbeats'. They were Club records first and foremost so ‘Hip Hop Club Breaks’ is maybe a more accurate description. Armand Van Helden’s ‘AV8’ is the label most commonly associated with the sound, although Nervous Records & its ‘Strapped’ sub label were perhaps equally active. A few other smaller labels like Slammin’ and Kingsize also played their part. A lot of DJs principally associated with House music or who produced both House and Hip Hop were responsible for many of these records, often under aliases – Armand Van Helden of course, but also Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna and others. Many other names in the scene were known for making this style of Hip Hop almost exclusively – Crooklyn Clan, Davey Dex, Bobby J to name a few. Artwork here pays tribute to Armand Van Helden's AV8 Records.

Inspired by records bought and people met from a recent trip around the world, Rev. Shines takes you on a journey of samples and discovery. This is an all-vinyl mixtape, using records found while on the road this past year.

Rev. Shines is a crate digger in its truest sense; Questlove once announced at a show in Portland, “Rev. Shines built my record collection.” Shines has performed in over 15 countries, is 1/3 of the Hip Hop group Lifesavas whom Rolling Stone Magazine touted as a “Top Band to Watch” in 2007, and DJs the most popular Hip Hop dance party in Portland, “Live and Direct”. His mixtape series, Today’s Good News has a cult following and sells out immediately online and at record stores like Turntable Lab.

While working at the Portland landmark record store, Jump Jump, Shines met and sold records to music legends like the aforementioned Questlove, J.Dilla, and Easy Mo Bee. Most importantly, he met the proverbial king of House music production, Kenny Dope, whom invited him on a world tour, DJing and digging in countries like Japan and Australia.

What does Rev. Shines sound like? A decade crossing beat visionary, inspired by golden era Hip Hop, Southern Gospel singers, and funky Brasilians from the 1970’s. His dynamic live sets simultaneously put smiles on faces, get heads nodding, and suggest feelings of an ever-present coolness.
