Every hand-carved grenade

Fake Sleep – William McGuffey Perry

Fake Sleep will keep me on ice
The next dream would drop me through
Fake Objectivity will keep me artificially removed
I pretend to be staring at something far off
Dialing the brightness up
I’ll get behind something solid
Until everything stops

Mirages and false starts strip away the safe distances
Decoys and spare parts choke the exits and entrances
I can’t make out my shape anymore

When I looked to check the effort it took
To see a real solid thing where I stood

Key Chains – William McGuffey Perry

I thought I’d get a cowboy hat
The kind with feathers on it
A briefcase and the kind of wallet
That chains right to your belt loop

I’d stack them all into a pile
And leave for several hours
Then I’d look inside of each of them
To see what had developed

And it was key chains
That looked like bugs
All done up in pink and yellow
Their eyes light up
When you squeeze their sides
To help you find the keyhole

I sat outside in the car
Feeling good and funny
I slouched in the seat and pretended to sleep
With the radio all warm and runny

Everything’s passed down the line
Till it can’t go any further
And the last one there is crushed to death
Beneath the case of key chains

I dragged myself out into the night
To look for signs of survival
But all I saw was sleight of hand
