Next up in the Sorted Series we have a mix from Denver's Padideh Aghanoury, aka   @wngdu recorded from their set at Sorted 15 back in September! Since Padi is also a writer, we decided we'd have them write up some words about the set. 

"This set was one I’d been putting together for close to a year. I’ve been obsessed with this sound for a very long time but rarely find myself in settings in which jittery, dubby, wormhole freaky bass music would be well-suited, let alone warmly received. Yet when the lovely Veronica and Wally of Sorted invited me to join the bill with Bruce, Lee Gamble and GILA, I knew this sound was exactly what I wanted to explore. Not only is the Sorted crew a rare example of truly boundary-pushing curation and embracing of the weirder corners of dance music, so is their audience, so a massive thank you to all who came out and danced. 

This was easily one of my favorite sets that I’ve played in 2022. I am so honored to have been asked to play a Sorted party — a party series I have been a fan of for years — and beyond stoked to have my set featured on the Sorted mix series. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the Sorted crew for their unwavering dedication to bringing some of the most unique acts in the world to Denver and their benevolent support of all artists, small and large, that bask in the fringes of electronic music. Freaky fun stuff to close out 2022. Thanks to everyone who's tuned in and a big big shoutout to Lower Grand Radio for hosting Club Freak On. 

I am so honored to share the last show of the year with a DJ who can weave magic out of anything they touch — someone who's shown me how conventions can be flipped on their heads and completely re-engineered, and a DJ that teaches me something new about what music can be every time I hear them spin. This mix is a magical soup of tricks, musical refrains weaving in and out, and utter and complete deconstruction/reconstruction by the brilliant Kiernan Laveaux.

Gwen and I met last Memorial Day when we shared the bill with Bored Lord for omit.zone , and ever since then I have been in absolute awe of her skills behind the decks and on hardware. We really got to connect at Honcho Campout this year and share some magical moments on the dancefloor and develope our signature cocktail, "the Honcho Special" 😉 I'm so grateful to know Gwen and am so privileged to be her friend, and it's my honor to feature her on my radio show this month.

Based between Austin and Denver, Al V Dam bridges hard-hitting rave with y2k era pop bangers for gorgeous blend of high-energy euphoria. Al V Dam is one half of the party series Ømit and runs the venue Club Eternal in Austin, TX. They are also my dearest, bestest friend and I love them to death <3 enjoy!

And we're back after taking the month of May off from Club Freak On. This mix is partly a reimagination of my set at Junk Drawer in May as well as a tribute to the sounds and sets I soaked up while in Detroit for Movement.

This month I have the privilege of hosting Miami's bass queen Marie Qrie on Club Freak On! I met Steph aka Marie Qrie exactly one year ago and we immediately were drawn to each other. Steph is one of the most hard-working people I've ever met and extremely talented, a powerhouse of wobbling basslines and eclectic rhythms. Her sound is a stark and warmly-welcomed contrast to the clubbier sound of Miami's underground, and she has established herself as a stalwart across numerous parties, both in Miami and beyond. I am honored to be able to call her one of my dearest friends and her presence on this radio show was long overdue. Tune in for a sexy, red-hot summer mix, myself on the first hour and Marie Qrie on the second hour!

This month is a special episode. I'm honored to feature the exhilarating DJ, curator and connoisseur, and one of my best friends, Yuqi aka Yuzhuuu. Currently residing in D.C., Yuzhuuu travels through a range of speed, disjointed rhythms and emotive frequencies with slippery ease, and this mix is no exception. Yuzhuuu hosts the event series Pedal Dance, which brings a refreshing slate of freaky bass music to the nation's capital. 

For my segment of this mix this month, I've chosen to share my set from the seminal Colorado party Lunar Lodge, which I had the privilege to close out this year. A full moon party held on a private property on the bank of the Boulder Creek, Lunar Lodge returned for the first time in 6 years and it was an absolute honor to be a part of it after hearing tales of its legacy for years.

Though s.t3v is relatively new to DJing, his quick mastery makes this mix sound like he's a seasoned pro—which should come as no surprise, given he's a tremendously talented musician. This is my final mix of 2023, a dark acidy odyssey with some raving classics. My guest this month is none other than Roiju, who resides in Boston by way of Miami. Roiju throws the Body Method party series in conjunction with Clear the Floor, and he so generously invited me to play last March alongside previous Club Freak On guest Yuzhuuu. Roiju is a tremendously talented producer and selector, and this mix is an hour of dark, freaky selections as well as a bunch of unreleased music of his own and fellow peers. An amazing way to close out 2023, I'm honored to share his mix alongside my own.

A local fixture in the queer dance scene in the Mile High and beyond, pips brings together 90s film soundtracks with jackin' rave anthems and candy-coated house. The result? Club Freak On 1/26/24 — wngdu and pips

February's episode of Club Freak On features none other than Denver gem, Pristal! Marco aka Pristal is a multi-talented DJ, producer, musician and dancer. They are very active in both Denver's music community as well as the ballroom scene. Operating the mix and now party series Pinky Swear, as well as the father of the House of Rashaad Newsome, Marco's presence in our community is irreplaceable. You can hear choppy vogue cuts alongside heady techno and euphoric house in this mix.

My mix this month features the track "R3V" by Atom™, a play on "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott Heron. In this track, the vocal part repeats "the revolution will not be online" a line I find fitting for the distressing climate we find ourselves in at this current moment. Videos of horrific violence the IOF unleashes upon the Palestinian people are couched between advertisements for sports betting and AI-generated pornographic images, followed by more videos of tyranny in the form of police brutality, politicians running away from brave constituents confronting them and our President licking an ice cream cone while waffling on a response to the starving brown people besieged under his direction. Our future feels extremely bleak right now, and my mix is both a reflection of that darkness as well as an escape from it. I hope you enjoy. Free Palestine.

This month's guest is Denver's best-kept secret, Corrigan. One of the few DJs in this city who only plays vinyl, Corrigan's deep and rich knowledge of rap, g-tech, baltimore club and more is unrivaled. He runs the party Break Even as well as the music blog lebronjames.co and is an absolute weapon on the decks. Since we both have shows on May 11th, I thought, what better way to promote than to showcase our sounds in this month's episode of Club Freak On? Catch me May 11th with Josh Cheon during the day and Break Even with Beautiful Swimmers at night. A rare double feature to kick off the summer in Denver.
