On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Kompakt 2013 was invited to contribute to Cologne’s highly reputed art fair, Art Cologne. For the event, WOLFGANG VOIGT designed, inter alia, a sound installation situated in the entrance area of the fair. In line with the cool steel and glass architecture, the abstract minimal „machine music“ flowed out of the manually operated arpeggiator.
Under the title " ZUKUNFT OHNE MENSCHEN“, Voigt created a multimedia concept in ten parts, composed of music, videos, and digital painting. Improvising with virtuosity on industrial sequencer and computer programmes, Voigt created individual sound and visual artwork that comes alive only through the artist’s unique style.
The music sounds as if produced by a random generator although it is made by hand, e.g. like a piano. From photos Voigt took in urban environments he erased all images of people and text, using digital paint programmes, and deformed them into abstract art. Mechanical painting is the term Voigt uses for this excessive style, in which no real paint flows and everything is revocable. The cursor, recorded on the film whilst painting over the photos, looks like a garden hose out of control, boring through the picture.
With “ZUKUNFT OHNE MENSCHEN“, Voigt shares a title with a TV docu-fiction, which phantasizes in a not entirely serious manner about the planet’s future following the disappearance of mankind. Using „dehumanised“ digital machines, Voigt creates a striking acoustic and visual world with an unique artistic signature. The Man Machine 3.0.
The release, now available as deluxe book-CD format, comprises 10 pieces of music and 10 works of visual art.

ZAUBERBERG – Wolfgang Voigt’s most fundamental (and foreboding) release under his alias GAS and perhaps of all in his untold discography – finally stands alone once again and is released in the way its original splendour.

Originally released in 1997 on the iconic Frankfurt imprint Mille Plateaux, and then reissued in 2016 as a part of GAS “BOX”, ZAUBERBERG is now released on his own label KOMPAKT on 180 gram vinyl in its original.

Though this narcotic symphony is not the first release under the GAS moniker, ZAUBERBERG is the first to disclose the true nature of Wolfgang Voigt’s unified sound and ideology as GAS. Mülheim Deluxe is a musical project by the Voigt-brothers Reinhard and Wolfgang. It has its roots in the largest district of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine: Mülheim. To get there, one has to cross the Mülheim bridge. To some extent, Mülheim is the Brooklyn of Cologne.

The seven tracks on the digital album »Mülheim Deluxe 1« vary between the Voigt & Voigt typical fun-techno-bangers, known from their Kompakt Extra/Speicher or Erdingertrax releases, and some abstract-minimalistic surrealism of Pop. While partying with the ghosts of the Internet’s pop-cinema, genres and rules of taste are annulled; men and machines are pushed to the limits of creative foolishness.

We hear the medieval sounds of lutes and flutes weaving into fragments of baroque falsetto singing, bells, and bugles, creating abstract amorphous sound constructs. Little spinet and harp loops gyrate intoxicatedly across beautifully feverish violin planes. Atonality And euphony flow into each other effortlessly and part again. Wolfgang Voigt, born in 1961 in Cologne, Germany, is an artist, music producer, label owner and one of the co-founders of the Cologne-based electronica and techno label Kompakt.

Working under many different project names and pseudonyms (e.g. Mike Ink, Studio1, M:I:5, GAS, Love Inc., Freiland, Wassermann…), Wolfgang Voigt has continuously varied his own, unmistakable music style from the onset of the 1990s, spanning the spectrum from creating experimental and unusual hybrids by combining elements of techno with German Schlager and folk music, to pioneering, austere minimalistic concept techno series such as Studio1, a series that was limited to 10 vinyl releases, the cover of each bearing a plain color design without any text.
