Coherent groove oriented energy is what gives TRUNK its bite. This 4-wheel drive moves over every harmonic and metric terrain possible. They successfully played the Amsterdam clubcircuit for years and finally come up with a hot album that will be presented in fall. Saxophonist Iman Spaargaren (Dutch Young VIP Tour 2012) is a internationally very active front and sideman, playing in a range of exciting bands. Pianist Wolfgang Maiwald has his own piano trio and has performed with many greats such as Jesse van Ruller, Ellen ten Damme and Rick Margitza. Bass player Dave Sahanaja plays with Captain Hook and Horns of Plenty. Drummer Franc auf dem Brinke tours extensively with Deborah J. Carter, Toon Roos and The Christian Hassenstein Trio.

Wolfgang Maiwald is a contemporary jazz pianist with an original sound. His compositions distinguish themselves by catchy, narrative melodies, compelling grooves and lyrical improvisations.
 
Maiwald, born and raised in Germany, began playing the piano at the age of 14 as an autodidact. He formed a local rock band, writing his own songs and lyrics. Soon after that he became interested in jazz. In 1998 he won first price at the “Jugend Jazzt Niedersachen” jazz contest for both best soloist and band leader.
 
In 1990 Maiwald moved to Holland to study jazz piano at the Hilversum Conservatory. He graduated Cum Laude in 1995, settled in Amsterdam and developed into an exceptionally sophisticated and subtle musician.
 
After working as a sideman in various groups and formations he debuted with his first album under his own name entitled “Two Faces” with his trio, the Wolfgang Maiwald Trio in 2010. The album deservedly garnered wide critical acclaim and is distributed in the Netherlands, Germany and Japan.

In 2013 Maiwald showcased with the Wolfgang Maiwald Trio at the Dutch Jazz Day 2013, in 2014 he won the semi-finals of the “Dutch Jazz Competition 2014” performing with his trio.

The second album of the trio, entitled ‘The Silent Ones’ will be released in fall 2014 in The Netherlands and Japan. One track of this album has recently been released on a jazz compilation cd in Japan.
 
Wolfgang has been playing performances and concerts in different styles and formations in the Netherlands and abroad. He shared the stage with famous Dutch and international (jazz)musicians like Ferdinand Povel, Cameron Brown, Rick Margitza, Joe Lovano, Tim Ries, Miguel Martinez, Jesse van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Jan Menu, Bart van Lier, Ben van den Dungen, Deborah Carter, Ben van Gelder, Willem Hellbreker, Robin Verheyen, Tineke Postma, Maarten Ornstein, Jasper Blom, Susanne Alt, Ed Verhoeff, Yaniv Nachum, Ellen ten Damme a.o..
 
Besides being a jazz pianist Wolfgang knows his way well with synthesizers, studio equipment and contemporary styles as funk, soul and dance music. He runs a recording studio where he produces for various artists. Maiwald wrote and produced for the German television station ZDF.
 
Wolfgang teaches jazz piano at the DJAM, the School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Amsterdam.
