Those were the days. Me in the old Tresor club. What energy!
In this 50 minute excerpt I mixed 33 records. That makes 1.5 minutes per record. That was nothing special for me back then, it was normal. 

You can hear tracks by Rush, Surgeon, Jeff Mills, Luke Slater, Steve Pointexter, Robert Hood, Rotterdamm Records, DJ Funk, DJ Assault and others.

The Big Main Floor "Hammerhalle" at Sisyphos is always a lot of fun. It goes up well there, always!
The mix shows that you (I) can play really straight forward even with "only" 135BpM. 
I had fun with it and so did the crowd (at least I think so? :)

Because yes, it was arse cold and it was raining. And yet it was beautiful. So beautiful that I would perhaps describe it as one of my warmest open airs ever... ❤️❤️❤️

DJ WolleXDP exploring new paths?

“ #DeepTechno ”? “ #HypnoticTech ”? “ #DarkTrance ”? – whatever it is. I honestly have no idea whether this already qualifies as its own genre (maybe some of you do?), and as many of you know, I’ve never cared much for those kinds of labels anyway.

Here’s the backstory: a few weeks ago, I went to #Sisyphos with my girlfriend to finally experience my dear DJ dude #OliverHuntemann live again – someone I deeply admire. For me, Oliver is one of the most consistently reliable DJs when it comes to delivering exactly the kind of journey I love creating myself behind the decks: a beautiful trip where I can dissolve entirely into (collective) trance.

He didn’t disappoint.
But what struck me most was how he made me experience the #Hammerhalle in a completely new way.
I was genuinely blown away.
The last time I heard him play was at “#BuchtderTräumer” in the summer. I never would have imagined that he could bring that very special vibe of his into the Hammerhalle.
Wow – so that kind of thing really can happen here too?

Now, if you think I simply tried to imitate Oliver – then you don’t know me.
And more importantly, anyone who truly knows us both would understand that we have very different views on what music is – or can be.
Naturally, my track selection and my set dramaturgy are completely different from his.

But maybe what connects us isn’t something you hear – maybe it’s something you feel, from the dancefloor perspective?
For me, it’s always about energy. About depth. About emotion. And sometimes, it’s about that very specific calmness that certain tracks need to really shine.

But enough introduction.

Of course, this mix is still 100% #WolleXDP.
And yet – it’s different.
So different, in fact, that for me it marks something like a milestone.
I’ve been working on this kind of sound in my head for quite some time now.
And on Tuesday morning at Sisyphos, I finally got the chance to try it out – and to play all those tracks I’ve been collecting for years just for myself. Tracks I love – but never had the right context to actually play in public.

Special shout-out to the #lightingoperator – I’m almost certain they really felt the music.
The lighting matched the vibe perfectly and played a big part in what happened that morning.
What a joy!

To make this beautiful music accessible to others as well, I’ve decided to launch a new mix series called “Homework.”

WolleXDP goes disco?
Of course not. But I have many musical roots, and therefore many different facets. One of them is HiNRG. Patrick Cowley remains one of my greatest heroes to this day.

But why did this special disco mix come about?
Here’s the story:
The features in my new Traktor software are huge. To fully take advantage of all these new possibilities, I not only had my own special modifications (modding) done, but I’m also practicing almost as intensively and as much as I did in my early vinyl days or when I first got Traktor.
So that I don’t end up hearing only my current tracks and lose the fun, I wanted to make a mix for a change using only the tracks in my library listed under the keyword 'disco' – something I always wanted to do.

Homework Pt 02 - NuDisco Edition (121BpM)

Paul van Dyk gave me this tape on Sunday, September 22, 1991, to apply for Berlin's biggest rave at the time, "The Brain"  (I was the promoter of that event ).

We had met the night before. We talked about techno and the musically disastrous premiere of "The Brain". Unfortunately, there was relatively little trance playing, but mostly just generic rave techno – and we discovered that we had very similar tastes in music at this time.

He had the talent and the luck that such things were still possible back then. Indeed, he got the "gig" and was allowed to play four weeks later as a complete beginner (he had previously played once for 30 minutes without an audience at Tresor because Rok was late) in front of over 2,000 people at this party. He shared the night, alternating sets, with DJ Conrad. And so that he could do it at all, I financed two turntables (Technics 1210) and his record purchases for him back then.

I needed him because there was no other DJ who could realize my vision of a different techno sound (trance) at this party. The concept of this party was completely crazy. It was the first time worldwide that the sounds and light effects of so-called "brain machines" were integrated into a dance party. All Berlin newspapers and even television reported extensively on these parties. They were a real sensation!

Back then, people didn't come to the parties because of some DJ, but because of the music and the event concepts and their execution.

After his successful debut at "The Brain" in October 1991, we continued these parties monthly until the venue was shut down in May 1992. After that, our paths diverged. He further developed trance at the (initially much smaller) Dubmission parties, while I set up the world's hardest club, "Hartware," in a Berlin bunker.

When techno parties first began, there was only ever one big floor. The art of the DJ was to get everyone dancing and lead the crowd into a state of collective ecstasy.
That ideal still guides me today, which is why I don’t categorise music into strict genres. At the end of the day, it’s all electronic dance music – so I simply take what I like best and mix it together.
I never use pre-arranged playlists. Every set I play is created live, in the moment, in dialogue with the dancefloor.
When I play old-school, it’s exclusively on vinyl – with classic turntables, just like in the early days.
For my current sound, however, I work with a Native Instruments S4 that has been hard- and software modified to my specifications – a customised setup that allows me to shape the music exactly the way I feel it, or the way the crowd calls for it.

But it’s not about me as a DJ. I’m not the party – you are!
