June Chua is one of the unsung ‘sheroines’ we spoke to in Season 1 of WomenTalk Pulse. She is the co-founder of The T Project, a shelter for homeless transgenders. She founded this project together with her late sister because of the lack of social service support for the transgender community in Singapore. As a transwoman who underwent SRS (Sex Reassignment Surgery) at 17, June understands the tribulations and discrimination faced by transgenders in society, and hopes to empower them by providing a safe haven for them.

For the second episode of Her Story on WomenTalk Radio, we had the privilege of speaking with Sangmo Sherpa, a Nepalese undergraduate student currently studying sociology at Saint Mary's University in Canada. Hailing from a small village in the Sindhupalchok District in Nepal, Sangmo did not let her family background, as well as gender, stop her in her journey towards attaining higher education. With tenacity and strength, she has defied all odds by going abroad to pursue her interest in sociology. Sangmo believes that everyone has a right to education and hopes to use the knowledge that she has been equipped with to make a difference in the lives of others. Meet Phebe Cho, the founder of Accelus, a talent consultancy and career coaching agency in Perth, which aims to help women to transition back into the workforce. Inspired by her own personal experiences with the glass ceiling, Phebe chose to leave her stable corporate life behind to pursue her passion in connecting individuals with meaningful work. In addition to empowering women with regards to their career ambitions, she has also started an initiative by the name of "Project Lucy" to help female ex-convicts successfully return to the workforce. With a strong belief in the human potential, Phebe hopes to inspire other women to harness the unique strengths and abilities that they have in redefining their careers. In our latest podcast on WomenTalk Radio, we had the privilege of speaking with Diani Citra, an Indonesian journalism student currently working on her doctoral dissertation in New York. Despite losing her parents at a very young age and struggling financially as a youth, Diani has never let her personal misfortunes stop her from pursuing her passion in journalism. With the help of various individuals, she was able to complete her studies in New York University under a Fulbright Scholarship. Although she is currently staying in the US, Diani still feels a strong connection to her home country and continues to actively speak up about Indonesian societal issues through her work. By doing so, she challenges traditional stereotypes in a society where gender conventions often prevail, thereby helping to redefine the kind of ambitions and life that a woman can have in Indonesia.

A strong believer in the power of education, Siti Rahayu Baharin, one of the co-founders of Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, shares with us on WomenTalk Radio on how she is impacting children living in the Chow Kit district by bringing education to them. Buku Jalanan Chow Kit is a non-profit organisation based in Kulau Lumpur, Malaysia, which holds free classes in the streets for children in the Chow Kit area. By sharing their knowledge with the kids, Rahayu and her amazing team of volunteers hope to equip them with the necessary life skills to face the world and to inculcate within them the right values. Besides holding weekly classes in the streets, Rahayu has also set up a school for undocumented children, providing them with the opportunity to access education. In our latest release on Her Story, we speak with Eliza Noordin, the founder of Nashata. Nashata is an activewear company that caters specifically to Muslim women.

Eliza has always led an active lifestyle but as a Muslim woman, she often faced the problem of not being able to find suitable attire to exercise in. Inspired by her need to keep fit without compromising her faith, she decided to create a label which will fill in this gap in the market.

Building on her experiences working in tech companies and with venture capitalists, she set up the brand, Nashata. With a wide range of hijabs and modest activewear, Eliza hopes to give Muslim women the right attire choices to lead an active lifestyle and in the process, create a community of women that can support and empower each other.

In our newest episode of Her Story on WomenTalk Radio, we had the absolute privilege to speak with Doan Thanh Hai, the founder of Kids Need Books, a community library in Hanoi, Vietnam! Thanh Hai was inspired by her son's interactions with the library system in New Zealand to set up Kids Need Books. She collects English-language books from English-speaking countries and ships them over to her home country, where she hopes to make such books more accessible to kids from all walks of life. In addition to that, Thanh Hai also actively seeks to get parents involved in helping their children develop reading habits from young.

We are very excited to announce the release of a brand new podcast on WomenTalk Radio, “moMENtum”, where we’ll be featuring men that have supported and empowered women through the course of their work. For our very first episode, our executive producer, EUNICE OLSEN, had the pleasure of speaking with Wai Teik (Wai Teik Photography), a fashion and commercial photographer with 20 years of experience under his belt. Wai Teik shared with us very candidly about his experiences working with models in the fashion industry and the reasons why he has chosen to shoot women in empowering ways. He also spoke to us about his first solo exhibition, offerings, which is running from now till 29 April 2018 at the Gillman Barracks. Exploring the concept of ritualistic offerings during the Qing Ming festival, the exhibition delves into this unique Chinese tradition against the backdrop of contemporary Singapore, where such intangible heritage has gradually been lost through the passage of time.
