Hip Hop lyricist won21too (surname James Dzelajlija) combines elite-level multi-syllabic rhyme structuring with vividly descriptive social justice-centered storytelling that is all at once pleasing to the ear, impressive to the intellect, and insurrectionary to the spirit. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio but now based in Austin, Texas, won21too captivates and inflames his audience by painting pictures of the many horrors he witnessed firsthand while living for the past 20 years inside of America’s Prison Industrial Complex, specifically the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Prior to his incarceration, he shared the stage with many critically acclaimed hip-hop artists such as Twista, Tech N9ne, Fredro Starr, Monte Rok, Spittin’ Image, and Mopachino. He received national attention for his rhyme crafting prowess when female rap icon, MC Lyte, selected his poem, “Hip-Hopism,” to be the winning entry in her 30th birthday’s State of Hip Hop Today writing competition in 2000. His debut album, “My Destiny” (2000) landed him numerous appearances on various local Cleveland artists’ albums, mixtapes, compilations, and even a cameo on screen in the Velocity Productions film, “Hip Hop 4 Life” (2001). That same year, his ferocious rapid-fire delivery earned him the first-place spot in the Cleveland Lyrical Lifestyles King of the Iron Mic Battle championship.

As a testament to how incendiary his lyric writing can be, the Rules Infraction Board at the Mansfield Correctional Institution classified a piece of paper containing a single verse and chorus he wrote called “Everyone Rise” as illegal contraband that threatened the safety and security of the institution. His security level was raised to Super-maximum – the highest level in Ohio – because of a single piece of paper containing his riot-inducing wordplay. But because of this increase in security, won21too was introduced to his now loving wife, Azzurra Crispino, who co-founded Prison Abolition Prisoner Support (PAPS) – an organization that works toward ending modern day slavery once and for all and introducing those who are not trapped inside of this system to those who are. Together they work tirelessly to bring the PAPS mission statement to the forefront of the social justice conversation.

His latest single, “Free(r) Inmate Letter 2.0,” is his first attempt to reintegrate back into the musical landscape since his release, after 20 years of imprisonment, in June of 2022, and has garnered over 200 views on YouTube to date. Currently, he is working on recording his forthcoming studio album, “BlAcKjAcK: Tha Ar$oni$t,” a project that he says, quoting Samuel Adams, will set “brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”
