The White Wall

Programme notes
Commissioned by the Musicus Fest 2014, the piece is written for the T.T. Tsui Building at the University of Hong Kong. The hall in which the piece premieres is part of the University Museum and Art Gallery. With big white walls, it can hold different kinds of artwork, regardless of size, style, origin and era. The breadth represented by the walls impressed me both physically and conceptually, so I decide to capture it in my music. 

The wall is represented by musical time and space in the piece. A static background with subtly changing time creates a horizontal space, while rhapsodic passages and airy sounds juxtapose on top and below the background respectively create a vertical space. Just like the white wall is capable of displaying different artwork, there are traces of very different kinds of music, from Japanese gagaku music to western contemporary music within the space in the piece.
