The Caracal Project has been one of my favorite drum and bass producers for quite a long time already. When I heard his new EP and specifically "You left me hanging.", I thought that it'd be fun to take this one and try to turn it into something more 'bass-music-esque' - and here's the result. From August 10th to August 11th, 2024, over 1,000 creatives woke up early, clocked out of work, gathered with friends, and prepared for the 24-hour challenge to come. As submissions roll in, the day passes in the blink of an eye. Musicians put their final touches on their songs, passing around the master file for one final polish from all collaborators. Visual artists eagerly await for the few final minutes of their render to pass with no issues. All participants take one big, deep breath as they upload their files and hit "Submit". Out of 562 music submissions and 71 art submissions, 45 shining tracks and one cover design were selected and organized with care into one final album. It captures a glimpse of the evolving creativity not just of our community, but of creatives everywhere.

First and foremost, All Nighter is about joy; the payoff is well worth it, but the purpose is in the process. It's so much more than making a song or cover art with a friend—it's human connection. It's learning how to push yourself beyond your creative limits. It's taking pride in your hard work. It's meeting new people who happen to love the same musicians and artists as you. Creating what makes you happy is a joy that keeps the wheels of creativity turning; we all owe it to ourselves to love what we make, and make what we love.

All proceeds from All Nighter, Vol. 9 will be donated to the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, a charity that provides referrals, education, and support to individuals experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones.

Hey!

As you may or may not have noticed, it's been a while since I've put anything out. There's quite a few reasons for this.

I was busy with my studies for about a year now and barely made anything music related during that period. I also overcomplicated things for a long time, which had an obviously negative impact on the process of sharing music online. In a sense, this is also one of the reasons why I'm publishing this tune. I want to remind myself that sharing is both necessary and not as difficult as it may seem sometimes.

I'm still looking for the direction I'd like to take the Keitha project, which inevitably leads to inconsistency in the music I create. This fact always makes me doubt how to feel about this or that track and whether It's worth showing it to the world or not. Not to mention finishing stuff at all.

Despite all of the above, I'm taking steps. Day by day, I deepen my understanding of the processes I interact with, optimize my workflow, and develop an increasingly mature outlook on things. I really hope this will allow us to hear way more new Keitha in the near future, and I will do my best to make it happen.

Taxonomy is a kind of killing things. So how go about formalizing something as amorphous as the music of @c-a-a-r-l | You could practice apophatic musicology. This isn’t jump-up, because it goes beyond puckish hyperreality. This isn’t deconstructed club, it being so entirely stripped of referentiality. Rattle off sub-genres as impossibilities. And perhaps it is only drum & bass by the exceptionality it embodies. Of a category’s weightlessness when every technique and decision overbounds its associable formulae and expectations.

The only way I’ve come to understand CÅARL‘s music is in indefinite times. There is a mythic time to the music of this producer racking up releases on Barcelona’s @genome-records-1 | Of a music that does not seem to describe humanity, that in its combination of contorted, choral voices, palatial orchestration and infernal low-end appears to visualize each a mountainous past and the afterlives of apocalypse. So there is herein an eschatological time and a geological one. A music of tectonics and cataclysm. There is the time too conjured by CÅARL‘s aesthetic of petroleum and mud. The musical equivalent of banked sunlight and generative mires. Synonyms to the history of extreme and experimental electronics and a generic footprint. Thus a music best understood in terms of divergence, of the annihilation of stasis and priority in the making of something we have not yet a vocabulary to articulate.

With a bagful of IDs from CÅARL‘s own upcoming torrent of releases & those of their circle, this mercurial producer links up with Realist Alive.
