This is a freestyle featuring my boys Gavin aka T-Root, Tomas, this random singer named Journey, and myself recorded outside of Top Dog in Berkeley, Ca around 2009.

Early Sunday morning around 2:30 am on the streets of Berkeley, Ca, one of the illest cyphers took place. Here's how it went down.
We came up to this late night food spot, and this dude was chillin playin the guitar. Me and Juan, being who we are, started freestyling and beatboxin like it was 1998 all over again. We go around the circle a couple times with other cats joinin in kickin freestyles, yadayadayada...
Then dude with the guitar starts playin a lil rhythm, and singin a hook. Everyone else we didn't know left, so it was just us in the cypher. I had a feeling it was going to be something special, so I had to press record via iPhone Voice memo. The rest is history. No Stop/Start, no edits, no added sounds. This is 100% Live, Authentic, No Filler.

It's RARE I release a live mix. I'm usually far too critical and in general I think most live mixes should live in the moments they are created in.. BUT every now and then you come across an exception. 

On the 9th Anniversary since creating our event "Makossa", we were able to get the ENTIRE Latin Soul Brothers crew to be in attendance for the first time EVER with all 5 LSB DJ's sharing the turntables in The Town where it all began. This is a special recording to say the least.

Thank you to all our family, friends, and fellow music lovers in the Bay Area, New York, Los Angeles, and around the world who have supported us over the last 9 years. We hope you accept this as a token of our appreciation.

The Latin Soul Brothers LIVE at The Layover!

The mix that started it all. Makossa Classics initially came about as a 30 minute demo that I used to give to venues and promoters when I was looking for gigs. The mix consisted of some of my favorite songs I was playing at a new Tuesday weekly in Oakland called "Makossa" with my partner Joe Quixx. I thought the types of music we were mixing and the way we played them were unique and I wanted to capture that. I always got a good response when I would play the demo for friends so on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of our Makossa party I decided to add 30 more minutes and make it an official mix as a giveaway at the party. Long story short the response was great, Makossa traveled across the Bay and across the country to New York, and Vol. 2 came to light a couple of years later. For those that have only heard Vol. 2 and are hearing this for the first time I'm sure the voicemail intro will make a little more sense now. Hope you enjoy! -Wonway

Makossa Classics Vol. 1 FULL MIX

2016 was a year to be remembered.. 

Our hearts and souls were constantly being tested by the world. Hate and mistreatment of others wasn’t just part of our everyday conscious but normalized, propped up, and in the case of this country given office. 

For many (myself included), music is our release, escape, and medicine. We look to artists and musicians for solace in these difficult times, yet somehow 2016 wouldn’t even allow for that. Maybe it’s just the internet and the access to information we have now but I can’t remember another year in my life where so so many of our artistic and musical vanguard left us. From lesser known session players to the all mighty superstars, the world felt a little more lonely.

I decided to create this mixtape to commemorate and celebrate this long list of artists. Though I did extensive research and attempted to be as thorough as possible there was no way I could respectfully pay tribute to all and make this an enjoyable mixtape that wouldn’t be 5 hours long. My apologies in advance to Sir George Martin, Juan Gabriel, Leonard Cohen and many others (I still don’t understand how there’s only one EW&F song on here). In their place I included a few of the lesser known but still impactful losses such as Big Kap, DTTX, and Mic Gillette. Most of these songs have close personal connection to me whether as a song I learned about on my journey as a DJ, a song I’d jam to with my Mom or Aunt, a sample I rapped on, music I cruised and/or smoked to, or a late night dedication to a young crush.

As we finish our first month of 2017 with no signs of respite in sight I’ve thought a lot about spirit. The spirit of the people and the spirit of these beautiful artists. Though they have left the physical plain their spirit and soul is still very much here living on in their music and living through us. Creating this mix reminded me of that and I’m extremely grateful for it. May it serve as an example of hope and love as we continue on and la lucha sigue. 

We’re here and we’re not going anywhere…

This is from a show I do every Tuesday night called Thinkbeat Radio. I normally handle the hosting duties, but every now and then I'll be "guest DJ" and do a mix. After listening to most of my Thinkbeat mixes again after they're recorded I end up not liking 'em that much, but this particular one is still alright with me. In celebration of 10 years since Secluded Journalists released our first and only album (to date) "Who Are We" AND to keep our 1 song every 10 year average, we present to you "Old Man". A song that fittingly describes our "coming of age" in HipHop and in life. This track also features our good longtime friend/Bay Area cipher legend T.Root better known to most as Gavin Grant who lays down an amazing guest verse. 

Initially just a song to celebrate the anniversary of our album, this song will now provide as a teaser for what is to come. After 10 years, nearly 3 albums worth of scrapped material, various home studios, 70 hour a week jobs, homelessness, crashed hard drives, DJ gigs, arguments, fractured friendships, and nearly retiring the group all together, we are proud to announce the long awaited Secluded Journalists album "Sometime Next to Never" will be completed in 2012. As well as being an MC/DJ I dabble a bit in theater. This past year I was blessed to act in a play called "Tree City Legends" which ran at Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco. The play was written by Dennis Kim aka emcee Denizen Kane of Typical Cats. The cast also featured another really talented emcee named Taiyo Na, and the beautiful vocals of Rachel Lastimosa and her band Dirty Boots. 

     Long story slightly shorter, being in this play was a life changing experience for me. The cast and crew all had a special connection with one another. As our run was coming to an end I decided to not take this connection for granted and suggested the emcees/vocalists involved work on a track together. All the verses and the chorus in this song are inspired by the play and (at least in my case) were written for our characters in the piece.

     I reached out to my brother Ayentee (Secluded Journalists) to take on the role of producer not only making the beat, but structuring the order of verses and doing the final mix-down. Ant does a extraordinary job making the vocals sound like we were all in the same room when in fact they came from 3 different home studios in San Francisco, Oakland, and New York. Big shout to Dion Decibels as well who took time out to record Denizen's & my vocals at his studio.

     The success of the play in SF has given us the opportunity to tour as we'll be heading to Philadelphia, PA in December 2012 to showcase it at the National Performance Network's Annual Meeting (http://npnweb.org/site/annualmeeting2012). The release of this song is a celebration of our upcoming travels and return to the stage together while also hopefully getting some of you folks on the east hyped to come out and see this amazing piece of work.

     Thank you to my friends/castmates for your great contributions to this song and your great contribution to my life in general.

Originally recorded for @ThinkBeat-Radio, my humble offering for the times we are in. This collection of songs capture the roller coaster of emotions I’ve been on these last few weeks. The music journeys through moments of darkness and helplessness into those of self-affirmation and hope. The uncertainty of our futures (especially in this country) can create an overwhelming anxiety and sense of despair. At the same time more and more people enter hospitals every day awaiting basic care just to keep living. It feels like so many of us are fighting for our right to breathe right now.

Originally inspired by a mix I made for an ex-girlfriend's 1 year "date-aversary", I decided to expand on some of the blends and redirect the concept a bit. Where that mix was my love letter to her, this mix's sole responsibility is "mood" music. Many songs here talk about "love" but just as many cover heartbreak, lust, and just flat out seduction; all emotions and actions that can take place on one of those memorable evenings where the planets align and desire and impulse perfectly intertwine. This mix is not about squeezing in as many slow jams as I can in an hour plus. The songs are meant to play for a while, the blends are meant to be stretched out.
