2003년 1월 2일. 

저는 9년간의 대학생활을 마감하고 졸업을 앞둔 시점이었고, 예수전도단 서울대학사역 예배팀은, '캠퍼스워십음반 1집'을 아직 진행하기도 전이었습니다.

팀에서 역사상 처음으로, 인도와 태국으로 해외 전도여행을 떠나게 되었습니다. 마지막 준비 기도모임으로 모였던 그 날에, 리더였던 '심형진 간사님'은 "함께 전도여행을 가지 못하게 된 소수의 멤버들에 대해 언급하시며, 가게 된 사람들은 가는 부르심으로, 남는 사람들도 남는 부르심으로 남게 된 것이니 서로 같은 마음으로 중보했음 좋겠다"는 내용으로 말씀을 하시고 기도를 인도하셨고, 저는 '움직이는 것만이 하나님 뜻이 아니라, 멈추는 것도 하나님의 뜻일 수 있다'는 것에 출애굽 당시 '구름 기둥, 불 기둥'으로 가고 서고 하면서 이끄셨던 하나님의 섭리가 떠올라서 순간 이 노래의 가사를 적어내려갔습니다.

노래를 뽑아낸건 순식간이었지만, 그 노래가 나오기 까지 훨씬 더 오래된 고민에서 출발했다고 봅니다. 교회에서 FM신도로서 충성 봉사하며 9년간 청년으로 지냈지만, 가끔씩 교회 사역이나 행사에 참여하지 않는 이들에 대해 "하나님 대신 돈(알바)를 택한 믿음 없는 이들"이라든가, "하나님 대신 공부를 택택한 이들"이라며 폄하하는 말들을 들을 때마다 '그건 좀 아니지 않나?'하는 고민이 있었기 때문입니다. 저야 모든 사역과 행사에 참여하는 입장이긴 했지만, 과연 사역에 동참하고 충성 봉사하는 이들만 하나님이 기뻐하시는가? 과연 교회나 기독교사역만이 하나님이 원하시는 삶인가? 그렇지 못한 사람들은 정말 하나님 뜻에 거역하며 사는 사람들인가? 그러한 의문들이, 졸업하고 사회인이 되는 새로운 전환점에서의 제 고민과 심 간사님의 말씀과 만나서 불꽃이 튀었기에 이 노래가 쓰여질 수 있었던 것이죠.

지난 12년간 이 노래를 부르고, 사용되었지만, 더 큰 고민이 듭니다. 말 그대로 '사역의 자리'만이 주님이 뜻하시는 자리가 아니기 때문에, 어떻게 살아가고 어디에 있는 것이 주님을 기쁘시게 할 것인가에 대해서 좀 더 구체적으로 고민하면서 살아가고 싶고, 모두들 그러했으면 좋겠습니다. 그게 그저 교회나 기독교라는 필드에만 한정되어 머무르는 것이 아니기를 바랄 뿐입니다.
