stories we can’t quite fit on WLC, thumps, drones, DJ weapons, continued threads, interjections, addendums, non sequiturs.

Our second - well first traditional - drop out the ◢sidehatch. is Santa Fe based https://soundcloud.com/chandlerbaxtertipton ’s expansive LP “YICOLAS”. So much can be said about this record: this is frenetic drill n bass but groovy, juke adjacent, hip hop aware, experimental af pre/post/mid rave bangers. I’m reminded of an interview André 3000 did where he said of Squarepusher it was like someone had cracked a computer open and the tunes had leaked out. Or something like that.

I say expansive because over 19 tracks (but at a lean 45 minutes) tipton really gives us a broad taste of his ability, vision, and range. It’s really heartstopping stuff - often on the edge of overwhelming but then a gorgeous beach side cocktail sipping sample swoops in or some funky bit of beautiful synth lead craft reminds us we’re here to get down. 

Fans of Duran Duran Duran should have a lot to love here and in many ways this is a beautiful answer to this year’s “Supernatural Beast City” - but where that record takes cues from twinges of inner and outer darknesses, YICOLAS has little such shaded hues in its palette. These are vibrant broad stroke pastels, painted by a master who you have no business not knowing about.

Get involved, grab a refreshing bevvie, if it’s spiked a bit strong so be it, and come say hi to “YICOLAS”.

Hey this is Skwirl here to gab at you briefly about the records we have coming for this year’s thematic cluster! The theme is Nostalgic Wavs and each record has been linked to a concept under the rather large umbrella of nostalgia as a function of emotional attachment to memory.

Our first record in the cluster is Sciuridae: a self titled record at the nexus between the Skwirl and Shīdo monikers and is our “Kairosclerosis” record.

Kairosclerosis is the conscious realisation of happiness or bliss, which in turn inspires the mind to wish to truly live in the moment - to savour it - and ultimately to feel it ebb away. We’ve categorised it as Restorative, Present Unknowing on our Nostalgic Wavs chart (see below).

Sciuridae is the squirrel family of rodent or as Shmuel (Ehye/hoyah) blessedly coined for me “the familial forms of [Skwirl]”.

Making music is for me a very subconscious experience a large amount of the time - so much so that Skwirl and my ambient project Shīdo are defined not ultimately on genre characteristics but on the inner worlds and consciousness levels that accompany the sessions and spill out into the work. The pieces that comprise this record were recorded at the periphery of sessions for other records - often when fatigue of conscious action meets the internalised buzz of instinctive activity that the often tedious and repetitive rituals of electronic music making have burned onto subconscious flow states. They have also all come from a place of peace of mind and spirit, the conscious realisation of that peace and the desire to define that inner world with an artefact.

The result is a record very dear to me - most likely because it represents a necessarily highly authentic vision of my inner landscapes in these special moments. “Sciuridae” is much more abstract and subconsciously devised than my Skwirl work but somehow more consciously constructed than much of my Shīdo work - it is both and neither. In making artefacts of conscious realisations of peace, bliss and happiness these feelings and moments become crystallised and immortalised and in that way these tracks have been made to convey warmth - a warmth I genuinely hope finds and wraps you in a blissful listening state.

Our second record for Nostalgic Wavs is Southern California based composer Coleman Goughary’s singer-songwriter debut as Grander Gestures. It is our “Yearning” record - as categorised on our Nostalgic Wavs map as Past, Reflective; Unknowing. (see below)

Coming from last summer’s widely praised and well received Blessed In The Grand Scheme - an ambient symphony for chamber orchestra and electronics released on Mad Zach and yunis’ Antispace imprint, it’s with no small joy that we welcome his first foray into lyrical based songcraft to Woodland Creatures.

Each of Coleman’s five expansive pieces here are achingly tender and painfully raw echoes of one processing loss and the growth that inevitably emerges in its wake. The writing process spanned some of the most incredible moments of love found, love lost, hope manifested and hope dashed, discovery, inspiration, and soul crippling loss; and, these songs ring out in some instances as confident declarations of love and acceptance, and others as gasps for air and cries for solace and reconciliation.

Each evocation is beautifully underpinned by a staggering musicality and density that will be of little surprise to those lucky enough to experience Blessed In The Grand Scheme in all its lithe, earthily spiritual expressions of neo-classical composition. Farthest away from being a collection for the dancefloor this is narrative music for quiet moments, stillness, and emotional resonance.

It’s the kind of record that I as a teenager would have internalised deeply and been monumentally moved by - and that moment of lovingly reaching back across one’s life with new learnings and strengths to embrace the core of one’s roots and identity is the comfort that “Old Growth” seeks to cultivate. Despite being distinctly personal in perspective, much of Coleman’s record resonates outwardly with haunting accuracy.

As an effervescent denouement, Woodland Creature Tsodor (of last year’s stunning “Diffused Nocturne” LP) spins a web of silken sonic thread: weaving together grains of sound lifted carefully from the songs to guide the listener homeward with a conclusion that breathes and sways just long enough to become completely engrossing - only to end suddenly…leaving one yearning to restart, sit in silence and process, or simply to rest: delivered from this profound musical and emotional journey.

}white triangles is the experimental moniker of prolific producer, and all around top gent, sam hatzaras. sam has had releases on i had an accident, amok, oxtail recordings, and waste management and ◢sidehatch. is proud to have him.  

}}sam lives deep in the secluded expanses of countryside in his native Canada; and, either one wonders if the door to the yard was left ajar during a particularly cold fall’s studio sessions or he made the entire record whilst actively on nature walks because the chilly, sun-kissed god ray illuminances of colour and sound that comprise ‘II’ feel right at home coming from such wild, beautiful and powerful open vistas.

}}}white triangles started out as ambient love songs. ‘II’ is a different story. it’s the delicate marriage of intention and randomness. the tracks were recorded by collecting synths and sounds and then painting layer by layer - without hearing the previous layers - finally to reveal the outcome late in the process allowing editing and fine tuning the spotlight of careful craft in defining the pieces.

}}}}the result is a fascinating and hauntingly beautiful record that is equal parts intellectual (though never pretentiously arcane) and revelatory - a record that demands repeat listens. as each track lures one ever so deeper, old sampled clips of documentaries, interviews, field recording and character studies, act as wayfinding amongst cascades of delicate sound design. it’s just a place you want to be in - prayer bowls, gently murmuring synth pads, aching beauty, lost nostalgic wisps of Americana, and the warm hug of psychedelic fractals.

}}}}}each listen offers a new opportunity to discover new details and wrap oneself in a gentle, soft network of deeply moving sonic environments. i bloody love this record with all my heart. get your spelunking gear and…

In celebration of what feels like a year one for Woodland Creatures - and honestly you have all been gorgeous about the records we've put out this year so - as a massive thank you I’d like to share a collection of mashups that span WLC005 - WLC009 (with a few tasty Skwirl joints - of which, not an insignificant number are still unreleased).

Made early this year in preparation for live sets, these cheeky, raw, no edit takes were recorded as live routines instead of arranged on a linear arrangement line. So, lo! These rude bois swing, bounce, flow, are bombarded by FX attacks from the bouncing muppet on the controls, and occasionally grapple for the cue button unceremoniously. But never fear: they slap more ferociously than a feral jungle tigress protecting her cubs. 

Blessings and thank you all for the love - I have a distinct feeling you'll dig what happens next year so stay tuned!
