Flowers & Sea Creatures have been bubbling under for a couple of years now, but their debut EP on the ever excellent My Favorite Robot Records is likely to win them a huge new raft of fans. Compost and Buzzin’ Fly have released the Montreal duo’s work before now and it has always proved to be carefully crafted and hugely cultured stuff.

So it is with opener ‘The Very Next Day’ feat. Wrong Jeremy, which is a serene and widescreen track that builds patiently. Plenty of sombre synths marry with the downbeat groove, saddened vocal and nagging melody lines to create something poignant and perfectly balanced. ‘So Far The Star’ is another synth heavy delight that is crisp and airy yet balanced by heavy hearted vocals and a deeply percolating sense of machine made menace that always threatens but never fully rears its head.

On the flip, the filmic theme of Flowers & Sea Creatures’ music is echoed in the title of ‘Alternate Endings’. This is a beatless exercise in synth ambiance that allows the vocals to float in the midst of minor piano keys and swathes of echo. It is truly arresting and reflective music. Finally, ‘Citadel’ drops with an equally epic and dramatic feel born of shuffling percussion and long tailed pads that create a haunting ambiance with real feeling. There is plenty of art and craft in these tracks, which are far more emotive and resonant than your average club fair. On the evidence of this EP, surely 2014 will belong to the talented pair that is Flowers & Sea Creatures.

This time, label heads Jacques Renault, Nik Mercer, and James Friedman have teamed up with a pair of artists shrouded in mystery—the Dead Rose Music Company—to put out an EP featuring four songs that confound definition... 


The Four Songs EP is a collection of tracks that aim to be cinematic in their production approach: these are epic mixes meant to stand the test of time, fueled by huge drops, warm, syrupy bass lines, and ear-tickling effects. While the four songs are technically edits, Dead Rose have left their inimitable fingerprints all over them. Each tune has the air and ambiance of a groove you got into at a party, but can't remember fully the morning after; they're visceral and almost dreamy, like the jumbled recollections of last night's disco fading in and out of strobe-lit smoke on the dancefloor.

Crafting music at all hours of the day, there is often the instance where Chris sharpens his craft and refreshes his palate by creating music outside of his normal parameters. This natural shifting allows him to return to the next track afresh. Being that this particular output is very personal, it is unnatural for him to share such creations. But like the sneaky, talented horsemen that we are, we've been able to extract a couple. Starting with Love Like This.

To say the arrival of the Swedish trio 'Monitor 66' onto the scene has been explosive would be a pretty big understatement. House of Disco Records is proud to have taken them under their proverbial wing for the labels first single release, the swede's ethereal anthem 'Triscuits'. This track made huge waves when first shown to the world gaining strong support from 'The Magician' and a whole host of others at the top of their game. 

The track itself floats somewhere between the dance floor and the cumulous clouds above, lulling you to sleep while at the same time invigorating you. Grounded by a vocal sample from an old Keith Sweat track 'Triscuits' glides on a bed of warm synths and vocal stabs that will haunt your memory and a breakdown that reminds you of the timeless nature of just plain old good music. House of Disco Records have recruited some serious talent to re-interpret and remix this one. Previous housemate Roberto Rodriguez, future housemate Dead Rose Music Company and just plain good mates PBR Steetgang.
