For our 7th Mix we're proud to present a mix from Kenji, whose heartfelt sound collages have been appearing Sex Magazine for many years. 

Who are you?

Kenji! I am the former owner of Wasabi Tapes. I have made music under several names, the most famous being DJWWWW. All of those are no longer active.

What does the name “supernaturals of touch” mean?

Sorry for using quirky language! (Laughs) The correct way to separate the two is "supernal soft touch". I started this magazine and label when I was suffering from severe depression, and at the time I was looking for healing textures. That's when I came up with this term.

Why did you decide to mix covers? 

There is a subgenre of J-POP called "Setsuna-kei." I don't think these are very well known outside of Japan yet, but they are very commercial and cheesy sounding r&b with themes of love and affection. The lyrics are also often clichéd, like something a child would write, but to me I found them very pure. They don't really go off on too many tangents. I felt that was the attitude I needed, so I decided to sample and cover their songs.

How would you describe your musical style? Who are your influences?

Elysian Crampton is my absolute idol. I think she deserves too much praise. Her amazing songs have set the direction of the scene for the last decade. I've been pouring over a huge amount of sample sources and making collage music since around 2015, so I think this mixtape is the result of incorporating their essence into my style. That and the fact that I've started putting vocals on the songs is a big part of it.
