Today the tiny cold hand that she was holding in her slight sweaty palm was holding her strength and her weakness in its tight grip and its reluctant walk. 
This walk towards the 'Mazaar' (graveyard), off her regular route to her home near the Chinaar Bagh Road, was a Friday routine for many years now. But Salima's deep rooted religious teachings never allowed her to enter the premises. 
Salima, the extremely beautiful and rooted but extrovert girl, grew up in a liberal family where her father, who had great respect for her, gave her the freedom to marry any respectable man she chose. Galib and Salima's wedding was a simple affair but the glow of love on their faces was lavish. Galib was man of simple living and Salima a free bird full of energy. If she was fast for him, he did not let it weaken their bond. He matched up with her and slowed her a bit too. Soon Aftab was born. Their son with a dimpled smile completed their happiness.
Today Salima woke up before Fajr and got ready with little more attention to detail than usual. She woke Aftab out of his deep slumber just as dawn broke and rushed him to put on his favorite warm jacket that she had bought for him last Eid. She left home in haste holding his tiny cold hand tightly, even as sleepy little 7 years old Aftab cribbed and asked where she was taking him. He wanted to sleep longer. Salima paused for a moment looked at Aftab but then silently continued walking for few long minutes. By now sleep left Aftab's eyes and he started recognizing the familiar roads. The familiar roads he would walk every Friday. Nothing was different for him until they reached the Mazaar.
Birds had started chirping in their own language and hardly anyone was in sight except one old man who was walking with a Lamp in his right hand. May be he was going back home after offering Namaz. 
Salima waited outside the Mazaar as usual but only till the man went out of sight. Aftab felt the grip of his mother's hand loosen and looked in urgency at her face. She was asking him to wait at the entrance as she, for the first time in his memory, stepped inside the Mazaar. Salima walked ahead and kept turning back to check on Aftab but stopped looking after few turns and kept walking ahead, soon forgetting that Aftab was standing and waiting for her. But Aftab's curious eyes followed his mother intently until finally she was out of his sight.
“Woh udhar kya hai.. mujhe jaana wahan hai”

Like A Sufi

The Jhelum is the source of life and livelihood for the local residents of Kashmir. Inspired by the devastating floods in Kashmir, the song 'Jhelumas' talks about the tremendous perseverence of the Kashmiri woman.
