That can’t be explained just by ill-will from the media and the Labour right: those were always there. Corbynism: What Went Wrong? 1 of 5

Aiming to replace capitalism with socialism, James Connolly’s organising and ideas evolved considerably. One idea he clung to from the turn of the century to his death in 1916 was industrial unionism, workers’ solidarity across grades and trades and sympathetic strikes. That is how he saw his work with Larkin on the Irish Transport Union: a union for an industry and the members watching the moment until they could take over running the industry. His articles on that theme have never previously been collected compactly, and many appear in this short book — here in audioformat — for the first time in full since original publication.

The Morning Star is not an effective way for unions to gain support for their disputes and campaign. And the political cost of backing the Morning Sar is immense: in effect, presenting a vision of “socialism” in which the totalitarian police state of China is held up as desirable, military coups (as in Niger) are hailed as legitimate means of achieving progressive change, and nationalist illusions of “socialism in one country” are promoted as the way forward for Britain. And it’s not even true that the paper allows genuine debate on issues where there are differences on the left.

The blunt truth is that things aren't getting better. Austerity continues in the UK and women are at the sharp end of it. The Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex, and more substantively its interpretation in the hands of state and corporate institutions, is a major setback for the ability of trans people to live with dignity. The police have been instructed to seize the phones and search the homes of women who have late-term miscarriages, so that they might be prosecuted under a law from 1861. The manosphere is turning young men into activist misogynists.

But the future is yet to be written. In this issue, we bring you news of these developments but we also set out what must be done – and what feminists, socialists, trade unionists, and trans rights activists are already doing – to push back. The battle lines run through our culture as well as our politics. Starmer and the Labour Left — intro

At the end of May 2020, a group of casualised workers at Goldsmiths College, London announced they would be withdrawing their labour by taking part in a marking boycott, in response to a wave of redundancies, nonpayment for hours worked during lockdown and the management’s decision not to furlough staff. 

This conversation, recorded over Zoom, brings together five organisers of the wildcat strike to reflect on what made the action necessary, what its implications are for labour struggles in academia and beyond, and what its potential fallout- and future- will be.
