Of the famous suffragette family Pankhurst — Emmeline, Christabel, Adela — Sylvia became the pioneer communist who organised the East End of London, where many working class men also lacked the vote. The pamphlet recounts the contrasting evolutions of the "votes for ladies" of Christabel and Emmeline, and of Sylvia's working-class organising.

Aiming to replace capitalism with socialism, James Connolly’s organising and ideas evolved considerably. One idea he clung to from the turn of the century to his death in 1916 was industrial unionism, workers’ solidarity across grades and trades and sympathetic strikes. That is how he saw his work with Larkin on the Irish Transport Union: a union for an industry and the members watching the moment until they could take over running the industry. His articles on that theme have never previously been collected compactly, and many appear in this short book — here in audioformat — for the first time in full since original publication.

In 1984 workers at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead occupied their workplace in defence of jobs. The occupation and the strike which preceded it lasted just over three months, and then on 3 October the occupiers were arrested.

37 of them were found guilty of contempt of court and jailed. There is a campaign to lift the convictions.

Workers’ Liberty has published this pamphlet so that we can remember those who took risks to fight to save not just their jobs but the jobs of future generations.

Shapurji Saklatvala, revolutionary socialist, Indian nationalist and Labour's first BAME MP, was elected in 1922. This short pamphlet explains why trade unions should not be giving political and financial support to a newspaper which is not the "daily paper of the left" but the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of Britain (CPB). More online and buy: https://workersliberty.org/morningstar

The Morning Star is not an effective way for unions to gain support for their disputes and campaign. And the political cost of backing the Morning Sar is immense: in effect, presenting a vision of “socialism” in which the totalitarian police state of China is held up as desirable, military coups (as in Niger) are hailed as legitimate means of achieving progressive change, and nationalist illusions of “socialism in one country” are promoted as the way forward for Britain. And it’s not even true that the paper allows genuine debate on issues where there are differences on the left.

The blunt truth is that things aren't getting better. Austerity continues in the UK and women are at the sharp end of it. The Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex, and more substantively its interpretation in the hands of state and corporate institutions, is a major setback for the ability of trans people to live with dignity. The police have been instructed to seize the phones and search the homes of women who have late-term miscarriages, so that they might be prosecuted under a law from 1861. The manosphere is turning young men into activist misogynists.

But the future is yet to be written. In this issue, we bring you news of these developments but we also set out what must be done – and what feminists, socialists, trade unionists, and trans rights activists are already doing – to push back. The battle lines run through our culture as well as our politics. Workers against slavery: the US Civil War, the First International and the British working class. A Workers' Liberty pamphlet by Sacha Ismail.

In 1865, slavery was abolished in the United States at the end of a four year Civil War. This Workers' Liberty pamphlet looks at the stand taken during the war by workers in Britain, who organised mass protests against slavery and against British ruling-class plans for military intervention in support of the slave-owners. It tells the story of how this internationalist and anti-racist struggle revived the British labour movement, gave workers the confidence to fight for the vote, and contributed to the birth of Karl Marx's International Working Men's Association, the "First International".
