Just a short song I tried writing in the style of the Carter Family/Woody Guthrie a few years back. Wrote specifically for a wedding.

Lyrics:
Sun is shinin' deep into the lake this mornin';
No nests rest on trees - still baby birds are soarin'.
There's maps to be made, roads to be paved and wool to be spun,
This new kind of day, this new kind of motion, I can't even fathom.

Smoke no longer billows over the mountaintops;
these hours are fresh - soil's never needed raindrops.
Th'paths behind are beaten and rushed - their trees grace our garden gate.
This new sun may burn, this north wind may churn, but we've no thirsts to sate.

Moon's shinin' so bright, I can barely recall at all the toll:
I've had to pay for what I'd never thought I'd see through a keyhole.
All names have been set, all ways have been went, save for the West;
We'll set out soon, under that white moon, after we have our rest.

Canaan

A quick demo of a poem that I wrote that means a lot to me.

Lyrics:
Picking a wilted rose from your old garden
to bring into my life something beautiful.
Its violet petals fade and the thorns sharpen
as I bring it into my home, its crucible.
Find me diving deep into the puddles of your yard;
I'm looking for my key and my old punch card.

"Sic semper tyrannus," I call to your window,
unknown to the forty-day flood climbin' up to me.
Swimming with the red herring and the minnow,
lashed by the waves and your clemency.
Let me lock myself in a lighthouse far away,
where light don't melt in meaning and decay.

Did you know that Lady Luck is a widow,
crying at her husband's grave, three feet from her door?
Her billion suitors wait on her willow,
puzzled at her mis'ry, while offering her more.
Let me make my home deep in some maze,
where echoes on stone may deafen me with praise.
