WorkWeek interviews former San Luis Obispo Park Ranger Reginald A. Fagan who was an OSHA whistleblower in San Louis Obispo, California. He faced racist discrimination and blew the whistle on serious health and safety conditions. He was forced to leave his job and became a groundskeeper where he injured himself due to the lack of staffing. He applied for workers compensation which 
he did not receive but was later criminally prosecuted by the San Louis Obispo District Attorney for workers comp fraud. He reports that he was framed by the DA and was sent to prison in a retaliatory prosecution for being a whistleblower.

WorkWeek interviews New Orleans ATU 1560 president Valerie Jefferson who was fired after standing up for her members during the hurricanes and dangerous conditions for the members. The termination by the RTA manager Wiggins came  after she demanded that the company pay for hurricane hazard pay which the company had promised the workers if they left their homes and families to operate the busses.
She and other workers and supporters talk about the conditions that ATU 1560 members face and the conditionsof the working class. The company now says that they refuse to recognize Valerie Jefferson as president of the union which
is a violation of the law and part of what the workers call a union busting attack threatening all trade unionists.They also discuss the systemic racism on the job which they call the plantation mentality.

WW 4-28-22 Protest At AFL-CIO On Gov Funding & El Golpe,US Labor, the CIA, & Coup at Ford in Mexico

The premier Agit prop theater group  in the United States is the San Francisco Mime Troupe which  was formed in 1959 by RG Davis and has performed in the parks every year until the covid pandemic hit. This  working class theater group  was   unable to have live concerts due to the covid pandemic until this summer. During the pandemic it did produce a series of radio shows called "Tales of Resistance".
It’s latest show Back To The Way Things was written by chief playwrite Michael Sullivan and he  takes on  many of the attacks working people are facing which of course has been exacerbated by the pandemic and capitalism gone wild.
WorkWeek interviewed Michael about the history of the play and the growing corruption and contradictions in capitalism. With one corruption scandal after another in San Francisco City’s government, the play focuses on the public private partnership which is privatization of public services and Sullivan and his troupe have nailed it again.

KPFA Is a major station in the Pacifica Network of radio stations. On March 16th, 2024 a debate was held on whether KPFA should take a position against the genocide in Gaza and Palestine. The resolution was introduced by KPFA Local Station Board member Elisabeth Milos and after a debate the majority who run the station voted the resolution down 9 to 6 with many members not voting or abstaining. Rescue Pacifica which is a grouping in KPFA backed the resolution and supported it in the debate.

KPFA Local Station Board  Debate On Palestine & The Genocide

WorkWeek covers the  longest strike in the US which is taking place at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette where the Newsguild and Teamster member went on strike more than 18 months ago. The  Teamsters of  Local 211/205 were secretly meeting with management and voted to accept severance payments from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette management in exchange for dissolving their union and ending their strike against an employer that has violated federal law with several unions.
Following their secret negotiations and settlement the NLRB announced that it had issued a 10(j) injunction that could require the Block Company which owns the paper to put all people back to work with back pay.
The Teamster national president Sean O’Brien has not reported this to the union membership or explained why the Teamsters would abandon a strike that had been initiated by a Teamster local backed by the NewsGuild members at the Pittsburgh Post.
We interview Andrew Goldstein the Unit Chair and Pittsburgh NewsGuild secretary Natalia Duleba.
WorkWeek  also interviews Seattle IAM 752 president John Holden who represents thousands of workers at Boeing. He talks about their upcoming contract and the Safey issue of Boeing planes.

At the Labor Notes conference there was a solidarity rally for Palestinian workers and people outside the hotel. The crowd spilled into the street and the police attacked and arrested three participants in the rally. This week on WorkWeek we hear part of the ILWU Local 10 “Bloody Thursday” event at ILWU Local 10’s union and hiring hall in Fisherman’s wharf.
On Thursday July 5, 1934, San Francisco police shot two strike supporters Nick Bordoise and Howard Sperry. The ILWU shuts down all ports on the West Coast to commemorate the strike and workers in other ports were killed as well.
The speaks not only talked about the history of the ILWU but also the fight against systemic racism and the rise of fascism and the need for a workers party to defend working people.
On our second hour we interview SF Mime troupe playwright and actor Michael Sullivan about the issues in the new play “Disruption” and the the growing crisis in capitalism.
For the ILWU and ILWU  Local 10 “Bloody Thursday”  is central to the formation of this union and winning the union hiring hall not only for San Francisco longshore workers but all longshore workers on the West Cost. This annual event honors the workers who gave their lives for the union.
Poet Nairobi Barnes who is the daughter of a union member talked about what ILWU means to her and the history of this.
Other speakers talk about the ILWU, the growing attack on immigrants, Browns and Blacks and the threat of fascism.

He also talked about the systemic corruption of the San Francisco Parks Alliance and how the privatizers politicians and capitalists used this organization to push their agenda in Golden Gate Park ripping off the community contributors.  Rec and Park director Phil Ginzberg was directly involved in covering up the corruption despite the fact that he knew about the criminal malfeasance for a long period of time.

WorkWeek looks at the massive raids by ICE targeting immigrants and US citizens in many cases is causing terror and fear in these communities and also for people who visit Federal buildings and facilities.
On July 24th Federal union workers from AFGE, NTEU, NFFE and NTEU  rallied at UN Plaza along with supporters of immigrants to challenge the tactics of ICE at Federal facilities spaces. They reported that not only are immigrants threatened by these raids but also the workers of these agencies who are also under attack.
They were joined by other community supporters and the San Francisco labor council and SEIU Local 87 who supported their struggle.
Next WorkWeek looked at the techno fascists who are taking over San Francisco, US and the world.
The drive by the techno fascists who run the US government and local governments like San Francisco the world Center of AI threaten hundred of millions of workers. Andrew Lisbon who is a teacher in Oakland spoke at a laborfest.net conference on the role of AFT president Randi Weingarten to partner with Open AI, Anthropic and other AI companies to train teachers on how to use this technology in the schools. The AFT will partner with these techno fascist billions and get $23 million from them to train teachers on how to use them in the schools.
According to Lisbon, AI will be used to eliminate the need of teachers and will destroy public education and harm the students who will be used to help these AI companies develop their data to increase their profits.

WorkWeek looks at the massive exploitation of adjunct faculty. The largest number of faculty at most universities and colleges in the United States are called adjunct faculty. They have less pay, conditions and benefits of the regular faculty are are highly exploited by the bosses in education and politicians who allow this exploitation.
A panel was held during laborfest.net titled  Ending the Exploitation of Part-Time/Adjunct Professors in Higher Education and it focused on these conditions and what to do about them.
Included on the panel were 
Ann Robertson was a part-time contingent faculty member at San Francisco State University for four decades and is now emeritus. She continues to serve on the Executive Board of the faculty union, the California Faculty Association, and has spent years organizing contingent faculty. 
Carol Lang has been teaching history part-time for 15 years mostly at the City University of New York. She is a delegate in her union and has been actively fighting to improve the conditions of part-time faculty and facing resistance from her union leadership. She has fought for other issues that reflect her concern for the liberation of the working-class including divestment from weapons going to Palestine.  
Frank Cosco is a member of Vancouver Community College faculty union’s executive, bargaining and steward groups in both leadership and member roles for over three decades.  He is currently President of the VCCFA. He has taught English as a Foreign and as an Additional Language in Vancouver, Montreal, Italy and Japan.  Note: The Vancouver Community College faculty contract is a positive one-tier alternative to the two-tier conditions that will be discussed. 
Rick Baum is a member of AFT 2121 and has been teaching Political Science part-time in numerous Bay Area colleges for over forty years. He has been active in struggles at City College of San Francisco.

A rally was held at Alcatraz pier 33 on the issue of the attack on healthcare and opposition to the establishment of a new prison on the Island as well as the massive increase in funding of ICE and prisons.

WorkWeek covers a San Rafael CNA strike rally and speak out about the layoff of  42 CNA nurses  sy Kaiser and the use of AI that threatens workers and patients. The strike which took place on August  21 was held to demand a halt to the layoff of 42 nurses and the use of AI to eliminate healthcare workers. They reported that the use of AI will not only threaten jobs but also threaten patient care. Patients who attended also said that they are having problems getting appointment and having a large layoffs will create even more serious problems in getting care.
