WorkWeek interviews New Orleans ATU 1560 president Valerie Jefferson who was fired after standing up for her members during the hurricanes and dangerous conditions for the members. The termination by the RTA manager Wiggins came  after she demanded that the company pay for hurricane hazard pay which the company had promised the workers if they left their homes and families to operate the busses.
She and other workers and supporters talk about the conditions that ATU 1560 members face and the conditionsof the working class. The company now says that they refuse to recognize Valerie Jefferson as president of the union which
is a violation of the law and part of what the workers call a union busting attack threatening all trade unionists.They also discuss the systemic racism on the job which they call the plantation mentality.

WW 11-23-24  Panel On Gerry Healy, British Trotskyism, SLL, WRP, The WL & SEP

There are 2500 San Francisco hotel workers are on strike. They are members of Unite Here Local 2 and on the 81 day of the strike and  they spoke out about their fight to protect their healthcare benefits. The Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott want to force the union to dump their union healthcare plan and be put under the companies plan which is run by the insurance industry with large deductibles and less benefits than the union health plan.
They also discussed their struggle again J.P. Morgan which is planning a healthcare investment conference on January 13. The union is calling on J.P. Morgan to cancel the conference if the strike is still going on by January 13 or there will be a major protest.
The threat by Trump to deport 11 to 13 million immigrants and to use the army is a direct threat to the US working class and unions. There have been previous mass deportations of Mexican and Mexican Americans during the early 30’s and the lessons of this are important for the working class today. Bruce Neuberger is a retired AFT 2121 San Francisco City College lecturer and also author of Lettuce Wars: Ten Years of Work and Struggle in the Fields of California. He talks about these struggles of immigrant workers and their relevance today. During the California Wilson administration an anti-immigrant Proposition 187 was voted down by a mass campaign in the working class and unions and it has lessons for today.

WorkWeek hears from San Francisco Local 261 laborers who spoke out at a meeting of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. They charged that they had been framed up by managers accusing them of being racist and bringing a gun to the job.
Joey King who is Samoan had been promoted to a supervisor and was targeted by another Laborer who wanted the job. With the support of management he and his son Conrad King and 
Adolfo Padilla Rios another worker were harassed, bullied and terminated with the collusion of PUC manager  and former SF City Attorney Dennis Herrera.
There is a long with of corruption and cover-up at the agency and Hererra who was appointed the manager by former mayor London Breed had previously been involved in targeting a City attorney who was exposing corruption. He fired her and she won her case that he had bullied and terminated her for exposing corruption in the city.
It cost the city millions of dollars and he was rewarded by London Breed by being put in charge of the PUC.
The AFL-CIO and San Francisco Labor Council leadership have continued to support Israel and the racist Zionist  trade union federation Histadrut. On October 18 rallies were held at the Washington DC headquarters of the AFL-CIO and the San Francisco Labor Council to protest this partnership and also to call for a labor blockade of Israel. Speakers also called for the labor movement to oppose the attacks on Venezuela and a threatened invasion. The AFL-CIO leadership through the US government funded AFL-CIO Solidarity Center has supported coups against the government of Venezuela and has long been an arm of US imperialism.

McClain talks about the biological leak at the Grotton CT laboratory where 6,000 scientists work and her effort to protect herself and other workers. She was bullied and terminated and ended up getting a genetic disease that nearly killed her with Pfizer refusing to even provide her the information about the materials that contaminated her.
She discovered that Pfizer had captured OSHA and also had attempted to get her husband to pressure her to drop her Federal lawsuit. McClain talks about this corruption and what this means for all workers in the United States

WorkWeek starts our show with the two day strike of UC AFSCME 3299 37,000 members. They have been without a contract for two years and the UC bosses and Regents have spent millions of dollars on union busting attorneys to weaken and destroy the union.
They have also unilaterally increased their healthcare costs for workers some of whom have to live in their cars because they do not have affordable housing.
The other unions including UPTE CWA and CNA NNU were set to join the strike but cut a deal with the university before the united strike thereby dividing the workers.
The past shutdown of the US government was framed by the Democrats as a fight to protect healthcare by continuing subsidies to the insurance companies. Ed Grystar who is with the national campaign for single payer called the debate as a pillow fight since neither the Democrats or Republicans talked about getting the insurance, hospital and pharmaceutical companies out of control of the healthcare

WW-11-27-25 "We Can't Survive" The Strike Of UC AFSCME 3299 & The Capitalist Healthcare Crisis

European unions and dockers have been taking strike action to stop the military cargo to the genocidal Israel which is supported by the United States. The US has given hundreds of billions to allow Israel to continue the genocide in Gaza and pogroms in the West Bank.
Last month on October 3 two million Italians shut down the country to demand an end to the genocide and the USB national union federation leader Francesco Staccioli has called for US unions including the International Longshore Association on the East Coast and Gulf and the ILWU on the West Coast to join them in stopping military cargo to Israel
They are again going on a national strike on November 28th and there is an international day of action for Palestine on November 29th. There will be a rally at the international headquarters of the ILWU on November 28 at 4PM. It is located at 1188 Franklin St. near Geary and unionists will be urging them to take similar action.
Now to his appeal.
The growth of fascism in the US and Internationally is a dangerous development. In the US the biggest unionist supporter of the fascists is Teamsters president Sean O’Brien who has invited Trump to the Teamster offices and let him use the lobby to attack immigrant workers during his national campaign. He also is supporting the Republicans on the government shutdown and has been silent of the massive union busting against Federal workers.
Another supporter of Sean O’Brien and his support of Trump is the Teamsters for A Democratic Union. They invited him to their national convention in Chicago on November 7 where he faced a small picket of Teamsters. The TDU leadership also refused to allow Philadelphia IBT 623 president Richard Hooker Jr. to speak although O’Brien was speaking and seeking the endorsement of the TDU.

WW 11-27-25 Italy Gen Strike For Palestine & Teamsters IBT Pres SOB & Fascism

WorkWeek covers the  Pittsburgh Post Gazette NewsGuild workers who   went out  on strike over three years ago when the company unilaterally slashed health benefits and other conditions of some CWA And Teamster workers at the paper.
All  unions went on strike and this became one of the longest strikes in the country. The Teamsters eventually agreed to give up their jobs and gave up the strike but the CWA and Guild members kept strong and the court after years ruled that their benefits were illegally removed.
They spoke about what this means to all working people.

WW 12-4-25 Pittsburgh Post Gazette Guild Members Win Strike, ICE & Labor & Kshama Sawant

Trade war and sanctions according to trade unionists who rallied last week are an attack on US workers and working people abroad. In November 22, a labor community rally was held at the Port of Oakland to oppose the trade war and to demand that the tariffs must end. Speakers included from the ILWU, Teamsters and CWA NewsGuild.
In California particularly the trade war has led to less ships arriving, tourists not coming to the state and a slowdown in the Central Valley which is the largest shipper of agricultural products in the United States. 
The trade war is also pitting US workers against the workers of other countries instead of focusing on the billionaires who have benefited from the the tariffs.
This was the first labor rally in the United States to demand that the trade war be terminated.

WW 12-4-25 Teamsters & ILWU Protest Trade War At Port Of Oakland

On November 28, 2025 there was a general strike in Italy against the attacks on workers, militarization and against the genocide in Gaza. One union the USB called on the ILA and ILWU on the West Coast to join the international labor blockade of military cargo to Israel. European dockers have launched a boycott of military cargo to Israel to stop the genocide.
WorkWeek  hears from speakers at a rally at the ILWU on November 28, 2025  urging the rank and file to support a labor blockade of Israel and a halt of all military cargo.

WorkWeek on this show interviews labor historian Jeff Schuhrke, the author of “No Neutral There, US Labor, Zionism and the Struggle for Palestine.
The massive support of military and economic aid to Israel by the United States has a long history and intwined in that history if the role of US unions even before the establishment of the Israeli state.
Unknown to most workers and the public, US union leadership have played a critical role in supporting the state of Israel and also assisting the Israeli corporate trade union the Histadrut. In an important new book “No Neutrals There: US Labor, Zionism and the Struggle for Palestine, the labor historian Jeff Schuhrke talks about the role of the AFL president Samuel Gompers who supported Zionism and how US trade leaders became a propagandists for the establishment of a Zionist state and the removal of Palestinian workers.
He also talks about how the AFL-CIO leadership including Liz Schuler, president of the AFL-CIO has sought to also shutdown debate about Palestine in unions and the San Francisco labor council.

The Italian union USB called for the ILA on the East Coast and the ILWU on the West Coast institute a labor boycott of cargo to Israel.

WW 12-18-25  Rally At ILWU Calls For Labor Blockade Of Israel & ICE Raids In New Orleans & Louisiana

WorkWeek looks at the massacre in Ankara Turkey of over 100 trade unionists, Kurdish people and political activists at  rally for peace on Saturday October 10, 2015. Interviewed is Turkey Hurriet journalist Stefens Martens who is also a member of the journalists union  Basın-İş  and was at the rally which at the rally which was bombed and Ali Ergin who is with the labor website Sendika.
They discuss who was behind the bombing and the growing repression and attacks on working people and all political opposition.
Next WorkWeek interviews Al Rojas who was one of the founders of the United Farmworkers Of America. He discusses a recent public letter he wrote on the 50th anniversary of the Delano grape workers strike and boycott. He also discusses the struggle of the Sakuma agricultural workers in the state of Washington and the San Quintin Baja agricultural workers who had a strike of 70,000 farmworkers in Baja.
They have starvation wages at $7 to $8 a day and the companies refuse to recognize their union.
