** RELEASED OCTOBER 28TH** A stunning collaboration between internationally-renowned artists Natacha Atlas and Samy Bishai, this album consists of music commissioned for, as well as music provoked by one of contemporary dance's most noted luminaries, French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. Performed by the esteemed Ballet Preljocaj, the 90 minute piece was inspired by classical literary work, The Thousand and One Nights. Fans will be thrilled that it sees Atlas's long-awaited return to electronics and sound design whilst she continues to draw on the acoustic/classical. But this is only the start. In Les Nuits, Atlas's voice becomes an instrument in its own right, seamlessly weaving itself into the multi-stranded Atlas-Bishai fabric of sound design, electro-acoustic contemporary Western classical music, classical and folkloric Arabic music, film scores, and jazz. In Les Nuits, Atlas and Bishai take us on a musical journey of unprecedented panoramic proportions reminiscent of the Nights itself, guiding us through a dazzling array of narrative soundscapes overflowing with lusty vitality, disquieting menace, ephemeral beauty, and shocking savagery. Clearly, through composing for dance and being imbued by the spirit of the Nights, Atlas and Bishai have opened up a breadth of musical possibilities to find innovative ways of re-telling old tales and to introduce us to unforgettable new ones.

Vieux Farka Touré's beautiful latest album was recorded as an homage to his homeland. Being that his native Mali has been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012, his new album, Mon Pays, is devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his homeland.

‘For me it is a statement for the world that this land is for the sons and daughters of Mali, not for Al Qaeda or any militants. This land is for peace and beauty, rich culture and tolerance.This is our heritage, what we must always fight to protect in any way that we can. For me, that means making music that reminds the world of who we are.’

Translating as ‘My Nation,’ this predominantly acoustic undertaking had been planned before the invasions began. Inspired by his work with Israeli pianist and vocalist Idan Raichel, Touré initially went into a Bamako studio to honor the acoustic blues tradition of Northern and Southern Mali. Since that time, Mon Pays transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation.

Two songs on the project -Future’ and ‘Peace’ feature Sidiki Diabate’s kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Touré’s spectacular guitar work. Both tracks represent an important generational "passing of the torch" as Sidiki’s father, Toumani is considered one of the greatest living kora masters and was a close friend of Vieux’s father Ali. Their two records together, In the Heart of the Moon and Ali and Toumani, were awarded Grammies. At the 2011 ceremonies, Vieux accepted the prestigious award for his father, who had recently passed from bone cancer.

Mon Pays is the most mature and lovely record yet from one of this generation's most exciting artists to come out of Mali and one of world music's true rising stars.

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO FLAMENCO

From Israel to the Camargue, and from Barcelona to North Africa, flamenco forms and fusions are enchanting the faithful and converting new audiences.

Lenacay – born out of the disbanding of hip-hop flamenco innovators Ojos de Brujo in 2011 – seems to spin almost out of control with their fusions of bulerías, tangos, rumbas and soleas with Balkan, Latin and Indian music as well as club rhythms like dubstep and drum & bass, but are centered by flamenco. La Xula, who play sultry, avant-garde flamenco seduce by stealth.

Jerusalem-born Yasmin Levy brings her distinctive Ladino Jewish tradition to flamenco. While hers seems like a new branch, you might equally say she is rediscovering a forgotten strand of the roots of flamenco. Martirio, from Huelva, takes the sound forward through jazz treatments, and is equally at ease with tango, son and guaracha. ‘Fandangos’ plays off a moody midnight swing piano against her soaring flamenco vocal line.

Spanish label Nuevos Medios, sometimes referred to as the ‘Tamla Motown of flamenco’ is the home of Moorish-Cuban guitar quintet Son de la Frontera, flute and saxophone virtuoso (and Chick Corea collaborator) Jorge Pardo and Tomasa Guerrero Carrasco aka La Macanita, a singer who has stayed faithful to the gypsy cante style typical of her home town, Jerez de la Frontera.

These artists and the likes of Carlos Piñana, Londro, Carmelita Montoya and Carmen Linares are only ‘conservative’ in the sense that they embrace and nurture the ineffable, intangible quality of Andalusian flamenco: all are respected live performers, and bring that experience to their passionate, genre-expanding recordings.

Flamenco has a reputation for angst but with Mayte Martín’s ‘Por La Mar Chica Del Puerto’ we discover its intimate side. Completely different, but also heart-felt, the Camargue-based Gitano Family turn even the gloomiest images into bittersweet country songs.

This Rough Guide to Flamenco also comes with a bonus disc, featuring the music of Buenos Aires-based Al Toque Flamenco.
